I have been looking just about everywhere on the Internet. And I'm just as confused as when I started. There seems to be many items to consider with the controller.

1. Some don't show any kind of cacheing while others show 512gb 12gb, how does this affect performance of the card.

2. Others show variations of the PCI that is needed for installation. I have a P8Z77-V Deluxe which gives me several possibilities for the installation.

Example: Shows the cache that has me confused
1 RAID SAS 9361-4i (LSI00414) PCI-Express 3.0 x8 Low Profile SATA / SAS High Performance Four-Port 12Gb/s RAID Controller
2 RAID SATA/SAS 9260-4i 6Gb/s PCI-Express 2.0 w/ 512MB onboard memory RAID Controller Card, Single--Avago Technologies

I believe the SAS would be used for a more advanced requirement, which I don't have a need for.. My needs are a fast control, within reason. My budget is $125 to $350, I also need 6 ports. I'm looking at 8 ports only because of the limitation in the marketplace of 6 port.

My planned use of controller:
I'm going to be setting up raids with WD Black 4t and SSD 256 drives. I'm not sure how the controller card uses the cash 512 or 12gb but if it can help speed up my everyday operations dealing with video files It might be worth it.I will also be connected in a single WD Black 6t and a DVD. I did check the list on Tom's hardware and was not able to find what I need.

SAS is for enterprise hotswap hard drives.

SAS drives have a much lower data corruption rate then SATA, which is why they're ideal for servers.

what raid are you planning to use? (I think i know what you are going to say, i guess i'm just hoping you're not going to say 0)

>> Thanks for SAS info<<
Raid 0. I definitely know your concerns. I'm heavily protected in more ways than one. When it comes to backups. Took me a while but I totally understand the advantages I have using Acronis. For example, I backup my C Drive onto an WD Black 4t. Than in the evening. I duplicate this file onto an external Startech 4 port docking station.

I need ever been the speed that I can get out of the system without draining my Social Security account LOL. I do lay would like to have a better understanding in regards to a 6 port controller. It seems that it should have at least the following:
1. 6gb/s
2. 512 cache
3. 6 ports

I'm sure there's things that I should be listening here but lack the knowledge of. I saw the Tom's Hardware review on SSD Raid0. It definitely is strong.

There is one other way I'm considering using Marvell on my P8Z77-V Deluxe. Here I would use my first Marvell port for my SSD Samsung 512 Pro. On my 2nd Marvell port WD Black 4t HHD. This would use my SSD for caching my WD's needs. I have not been able to find any reviews that would give me a comparison as to which is fastest, SSD RAID 0 or the caching approach.

My computer has been down for 3 weeks. I'm involved in a total rebuild, Windows 8.1 64bit with 24g of memory. Every time I get close to getting started. I get cold feet because I feel I don't have all the answers. And for a guy that has read, probably 3 books since my grade school project, "Wild Bill Hickok", I have read countless articles on the Raid controller. Here I am still looking for answers. Not only the answers but the actual controller card that I need.

What about the SSD Raid 0 compared to Marvell port 1 SSD Raid0 with marvell Port2 connted to a WD Black 4t?

>>bump it up to 32gb of ram, and turn half of it into a ramdisk<<
Yes. I did read quite a bit about the RAMdisk and thought that looked good. There is a program to use with this, which I forget the name. What configuration would you use to install Windows 8.1.

I have 3 different memory sets that I was supposed to use to get 32gb. 2 sets are wrong and just don't allow the system to boot. The 3rd set. I was able to only use 3 memory slots for a total of 24G. when I put my system together. The memory that I understood. I should get was not a workable solution. So on the shelf they set. It was my understanding that the P8z77-V Deluxe had an issue in this area. And 3 years ago when I built my system, with the help of many calls to Asus, I was led to believe there was an issue with anything above 24G.

ok. in which case turn half into your pagefile drive.

*note, you probably should only use ramdisks if you have a UPS. total power loss can cause some serious data corruption. Actually since you're going to use SSDs in a RAID0 setup you probably should have a UPS anyway. SSDs dislike random power fluctuations

as to your RAID/SATA questions, i'll be honest with you, i'm more versed on the server SAS side of things.

Are you using SAS because you have many clients on a dedicated server. Or because you have tons of data on many HD. If it is the second would that be on a peer to peer or a dedicated server. I deal with 5 Drives that fold about 1 1/2 t on each.
