I've just spent the last three hours building my first scratch build PC, got to starting it up and the molex four pin peripheral power cable to the case fan control started melting; it was the only thing connected on the peripheral cable to the PSU. Can anyone tell me what I did wrong; or indeed, what is wrong with what component, if that's a possibility?

Solution
Hello... Well... What color wire started to melt? The yellows wires are +12Vdc and the blacks are GND.
I would suggest calling the maker of the cases for RMA.
Unless you want to start to get your hand dirty and start determining how a simple +12vdc GND 2-wire circuit is shorting out between the PS and your Fans... Wires can be crossed, Plugs could be mis-wired, Wires could be pinched between sharp metal, ETC.

So, it's the "power" molex connector - very hard to have plugged it in incorrectly! It only goes one way :p

Hi ko888

Yeah, it's very similar: a black molex connector with three pins, connected to the molex adapter that came with the PSU (XFX Pro Series 650). There's no molex connection on the PSU, obviously, so it's only possible to use the adapter...

Thanks; it's the number 3 in the molex, so not entirely certain why it would be carrying any current. Sadly looks like I'll have to disassemble the machine and send the case back. (although there's no certainty that a replacement wouldn't do the same...

Obviously I'm a little nervous about testing the machine with the molexes unplugged. Any idea whether it would be safe to do so? I'm assuming that it's just that cable that will be damaged, but obviously not certain... Could it have damaged the PSU? Unlikely to have had an impact on anything else..?

Well, after a google, there don't appear to have been any other problems with the case... So I can live in hope :p

and yeah, bought off Amazon, have to see what they say...
