Dragon Age: Inquisition - Artifacts & Crashing - Game or GPU?

So, Dragon Age: Inquisition is completely unplayable for me.

It launches fine, I play for a bit, maybe 10 minutes or so and then at some point I run into apparent graphical corruption.

One time, I saw white bits over the screen, another time a portion of the floor was missing and there were huge pillars where there should have presumably been a castle or something.

Some times it just crashes with no errors at all, graphical or otherwise, and sometimes I get the "dxgi_device_hung" error, after which I get corruption in other games too which disappears as soon as I restart and doesn't happen again unless I get that same error.

(I should add that this only happened while using DirectX 11, not Mantle. With Mantle it just quits with no error message of any kind.)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now, I know this seems to point strongly to a combination of game issues plus a definite bad graphics card, BUT:

I've run other games with no problems, namely, Serious Sam 3 on all ultra settings and Fallout 3, also ultra.

I've run Furmark a bit, no problems.

I've run Unigine Heaven benchmark several times consecutively. Tessellation, anti-aliasing and all. Runs reasonably smoothly, up to 55-85 FPS, GPU temperature maxes out at around 64C. No problems whatsoever.

So, is it really the GPU?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My specs are:

MBO: ABIT AB9 QuadGT
CPU: Intel Q9400 2.66 Ghz - Clocked at 3 Ghz (massive cooler, no temp problems)
RAM: 7 GB (DDR2-800)
GPU: ASUS R9270X-DCU2-TOP (Factory OC'd)
PSU: Perhaps a bit shifty (550W - CCT)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What do you reckon?

Is this a legal version of the game, or a pirated version? The game isn't perfect, but that sounds excessive, and the game is still pretty stable short of a couple odd things. The only artifact issues I've heard of is occasionally foliage might flicker, and that is mostly related to SLI.

I suspected that, but then how does it not exhibit any corruption in something like 'The Vanishing of Ethan Carter' on high detail?

Also, benchmarks are perfectly fine.

Very peculiar.

Uhh, it is though.
DAI is new and has different stuff going on, it also doesn't run perfectly, because it's new.

SS3 and FO3 are both pretty old now. and VOEC is a DX10 game.

It's possible it's only a certain VRAM region that is bad, and other games aren't stressing the VRAM as much as DA:I. Might also be a stuck bit that only occurs at certain temperatures, and something like DA:I would be much more likely to expose the issue.

I had a GPU go much the same way a few years back, but the only game I could get to cause the problem was BF3. Other titles, such as DA:2, ran fine. GPUs are complicated like that.

Only thing I can recommend to try is to use a different driver rev; could possibly be a bad driver version, but I'd still put money on a busted GPU component.

Looks like the driver did it.

I installed the latest beta instead of the last "omega" release, a weeks difference in release date, and now it's fine.

I'll give it another day.

UPDATE:

Yeah, game ran for hours with no issues... What the hell was wrong with that driver?
