This topic seems popular, I thought I would add my observations.

My laptop plays dvd's that have content (data or video). It reads blank CD's.
I have had problems with reading both Sony and Memorex 4.7GB BLANK DVD's.
I could not burn anything to a DVD.

Before replacing my DVD drive I purchased 50 Verbatim 4.7GB DVD's from Radio Shack. ($12.99 for 50)
After trying several each and every one has been read and used perfectly.

I have noticed that my older Sony DVD's have a red tint on their surface. The new Sony's have a blue tint.
It seems there may have been a recent change in the manufacturing process.

Certain optical drives will not work with certain optical media. I would look for a firmware upgrade for the drive that may help. Generally the better name brand media works better, but there are no guarantees. When you figure out a brand that works, just stick with it. The notebook optical drives were always inferior to the desktop ones; Liteon makes drives that will work with just about everything.

I did check for driver updates and have the latest driver installed. What confuses me is Sony and Memorex blank DVD's have worked perfectly in the past. I have had this laptop for 2 years.

I found and purchased OEM Gateway NE56R41u 15.6" Laptop SATA DVD-RW DL Burner Drive UJ8E1.
On Ebay for $15 with free shipping. Replacement could not be any easier on my computer.
Simply remove one screw pull the old one out and slide the new one in.

I forgot to say the replacement has not arrived yet.

in addtion to what above posters said about the media, i had issues with different media and a lot of posts on the internet about the quality of quite a few of the "name brands" - verbatim disks with the AZO coating (not the datalife model) seem to be the highest in terms of quality. there's also TY out of japan, but that for the hardcore enthusiasts will to pay extra and spend time looking for them

the quality of the burner is also an issue - when i started burning video discs, using a 12.7mm laptop blu-ray burner, it wouldn't verify 5 out of 6 discs using Optical Quantum disks and i thought it was the quality of the disk. Fellow posters on a video audio forum corrected me and suggested i go with a LG 5.25" desktop burner - bam, it burns and verifies 6 out of 6 disks
