My dad wants me to convert his current printer which is not-wifi and hardwired (usb-cabled) to his main desktop computer which is running Windows 7..to a WIFI printer.. However, he just got a win 8.1 laptop and wants to be able to print wireless from the same printer. He currently has a cable modem that is connected to a wireless router. I tried connecting the printer via USB to the cable modem (tried following a youtube video) but have had no luck setting up a local connection that way... Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Does the router support using it as a print server? If not, connecting it with USB won't work.
Get this for the printer http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833139009 connect it to the router with a cable, print out a test page from the device to get the IP and use that IP to setup the printer. Since the router is wireless, once you are connected to the router you have wireless printing. Or you may even find a new WiFi enables printer for maybe $100 and just get that instead of spending $40 to get the old printer setup wirelessly.
A free option would be to just share the printer off the computer it's on but then the computer has to be on for anyone to print.
