When I install a game (I have tried farcry 4, civ 5, mafia II etc), with the first startup the game (or steam) installs some DirectX components. After that I get to play the game and there's not any problem with that, all games run just fine. But when I shut the computer down and start it again the login window appear normal, but after logging in, only gray screen with a cursor shows. I have waited like 10 min but nothing happens. Only way to get the Windows working again is to restore Windows. I have also reinstalled Windows but the same problem still occurs. I have the latest driver for my Graphics card and latest Windows updates. I have contacted my retailer and they say it is propably a Graphics card malfunction. For me it sounds more like a software problem than a hardware problem but anything doesn't seem to fix it.

I appreciate your help!

I have a brand new computer, here are my specs:

WINDOWS 8.1
ASUS Z97-A motherboard
INTEL Core i5-4690K 3.5GHz
ASUS STRIX GeForce GTX 970, current driver version 344.48
8GB RAM 1600MHz DDR3
CHIEFTEC 1000W power supply
KINGSTON V300 120GB SSD
WD CAVIAR BLUE 1TB SATA3 7200RPM

Thank you for your answer!

I tried to reinstall the display drivers from the nvidia website in "clean boot mode" and then run the game but with no result. I also tried to run the game for the first time "in clean boot mode" and let the application install the directx components and restarted in the clean boot mode but still the same gray screen appears.

Does anyone have any other suggestions? I appreciate your help!
