Hello,

I have a 500GB external hard drive but it only shows 298 GB capacity in My Computer and in Disk Management. I used SeaTools and got this hard drive information.

Serial Number: 2HC015KJ
Firmware Revision: 01.01A02
Max LBA: 625142448
Host Protected Area features: Not Supported
Mandatory Power Management: Not Supported
Security Mode: Not Supported
SMART: Not Supported
48-bit Address feature set supported: False
SET MAX security extension: Not Supported
Advanced Power Management: Not Supported
SMART self-test supported: False
SMART error logging supported: False
Drive Temperature(C/F): 0/32
Power-On Hours: 0
Cache Size: --
General Purpose Logging Supported: False
Security Status: 0h

What is wrong with it and how can I fix this?

Thank you.

Hey riverscandie. Is the drive manufactured by Seagate? Because if it's not I'd recommend that you use the manufacturer's diagnostic tool, to see if it will show at least the SMART status. I'd also recommend that you try the drive with a different computer and USB cable as well (not longer than 12") to see if the same thing happens.

Hope that helps.

And yes, the external hard drive I have is of Seagate. Does it help if I say that my C: plus its partition also equates to 298 gb?

Thank you for replying.

That's a bit strange. Try it with a different device or computer if you have that option to see if the same thing happens and test it again. If it doesn't show anything, I'd recommend that you try a third party HDD diagnostic tool to see if you get any results this way. Hopefully it clears things out a bit.
