Hello,
I currently have an ASRock P5B-DE motherboard with an Intel Core 2 Quad 6600. I was thinking of upgrading my processor. My motherboard has an LGA775 socket.
One of my options is the QX9650. This processor has a speed of 3GHz and is LGA775. It also costs £125 on ebay.
I also saw an Intel Xeon E5450. This processor has a speed of 3Ghz, but is LGA 771. Apparently you can do a mod and get this to fit in an LGA775 socket. It only costs £39.58 from ebay.
The final option is an Intel Xeon x5460. This processor has a speed of 3.16GHz, and is also an LGA771. You can do the mod and get this to fit in an LGA771 socket. It costs £110 from this seller, but just £27 from this seller. I have no idea why the prices are so different.
I'd like to know if anyone has ever done this mod, and what their results were. It seems tempting since it's so cheap, but i've seen the mod (which involves using a knife and cutting the socket) and it seems so scary!
There's a video of someone here doing the mod:

Anyway, I look forward to any replies.
EDIT: This might help:

If you ctrl + f and look for "p5b-de" it says that my board is compatible with all Xeon processors. Am I reading this right?
I'd like to give this mod a try, but i'm a little scared about messing up my computer. I'm still on the fence, but hopefully some of your experiences will guide me.
