Ok so I have built my first PC yesterday. And sofar everything seems to be working fine. I've installed windows, installed all the drivers (I hope) and I've installed X-Plane a flight simulator because of which I have bought the PC. Now when I start it I'm getting 10 fps on medium rendering options! I should be getting about 60fps when maxed!

The logo on the GPU is lit, windows detects it, the monitor us plugged in the GPU, so are the 2 8 pin power cables. The only thing that's weird is that the fans are only spinning when booting the PC but after that they don't spin anymore. I thought its just cause they dont need to spin but why wouldnt they spin even after I start X-Plane??

Core i7-4790K
mobo ASUS Z97-K
GPU MSI GeForce GTX 970 GAMING 4G
HDD Seagate Desktop HDD 1TB
RAM Crucial Ballistix DDR3 16GB (2x8GB) 1600MHz
SSD SAMSUNG 840 EVO 250GB, MZ-7TE250
RAM Crucial Ballistix DDR3 16GB (2x8GB) 1600MHz
PSU XFX TS Series PSU 80+ Gold - 550W
Case Zalman Z3

Mmmkay :) Woke up as well...

So yea, the other thing I wanted to see is the clock speed your CPU is running at under load.
As RobCrezz pointed out your CPU is running at 800 mhz atm.
At this point I'm pretty sure you're using the power saver power plan in windows and in fact windows is underclocking your CPU as well as your GPU.
Set your power plan to High performance and disable the link state power management for the pci express as I pointed out earlier and you should be fine...
If by any chance that won't instantly solve your problems, go to your bios and set your CPU multiplier back to 40 manually.

Hello there,

Based on the fact that you built the system I'm going to assume you actually know what you are doing and you haven't for example connected your display to the onboard GPU connector instead of the one on the back of the card.. but you said you haven't so let's skip that part :)))
Have you installed the latest nvidia drivers? ( http://www.geforce.com/drivers/results/80913 ) - please check this and reply with the results.

yeah I downloaded them an hour ago. I just ran the Unigine Valley Benchmark and this is the score:

I'm not sure if thats abut right or not but atleast the fans did start spinning..

EDIT: This is the benchmark on extreme preset

Actually, no it won't :)

Your benchmarks seem about right and you said your fans aren't spinning fast (they only speed up when they need to in order to keep the gpu cool). Can you try max settings in your game and see if there's a difference?

yes, it's just not normal to run it at 10fps at medium rendering options. other people with the same rig are getting over 100fps with medium rendering options

I'm trying to disable the onboard graphics but I can find it in bios. Could I do it in windows too ?

Did you install your GPU in the top slot? which is gray colored? if not you should put it there since that's the 16x pcie slot.
Also in case your game is running the same fps on max settings as well.. it might be cpu related.. or rather that your motherboard is older than your cpu..
There is a bios update on the ASUS site for your MB which actually optimizes the use of the exact same processor that you have.

This is the newest bios version for your motherboard: http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/LGA1150/Z97-K/Z97-K-ASUS-2401.zip

The description says it was supposed to 'improve stability' not ruin it :)
Anyway, despite the blue screen have you noticed any changes in the game?
(The blue screen could also be the result of you trying to improve settings in your bios, for example trying to overclock your memory frequencies or setting your memory performance profile to extreme and boosting modules up to 1700 mhz will most likely cause a blue-screen)

Well no, at the end I didnt touch anything in the bios but the graphics order. I haven't downloaded the update for bios because I've found out the internet connection stopped working. And I got the blue screen when I unglugged the usb wifi receiver from the usb port. could it be related? I've realized I havend downloaded the latest drivers for the wifi so I wanted to do that but tp-link.com isnt working! isnt it great? everything is against me right now :D So I'll try to downoad the bios update on my laptop and instal it from a usb stick but I'm still kinda hopelessly stuck

It was probably because you unplugged it and the driver went QQ :)) If it worked with the older driver, it should still work after restarting, but yea, update it when you can. Right now I'm hoping we can do something about your 10 fps :) so yea, try the newer bios and let me know if it works

So no the newer BIOS didnt help, I tried to go to nvidia control panel and changed the settings for xplane manually but that didnt help either..

Just to check again, should I change the PCI express bandwidth from X2 to X4 ?

If you installed your card in the gray colored slot, then it should be running at x16 since that's a dedicated slot for single GPU use. If you have it in your black slot (just under the gray one) then it runs at x2 by default and I believe those settings apply to that slot. To be sure you can check with GPU-Z under Bus interface.

I checked again and it is in the top gray PCIE slot which says x16 and i the manual it also says that is the one that should be running at x16. I've only by accident seen in the bios that it says PCI express... and it was set to x2 and I could only choose between x2 and x4

As I've said before you can test your bus speeds with gpu-z, but that wouldn't make this big of a difference.. even at 2x that card should eat that game :) So.. let's try something else.

1. Download open hardware monitor http://openhardwaremonitor.org/downloads/
2. Unzip and fire it up
3. Go play your game a bit (if you want you can enable View - Show plot in OHM)
4. Go back to the Open hardware monitor window and tell me the following values:
- Intel Core i7 -> Load -> CPU total (max)
- Intel Core i7 -> Clocks-> Cores.. (max)
- Nvidia GeForce GTX 970 -> Load -> GPU Core (max)
- Nvidia GeForce GTX 970 -> Clocks -> GPU Core (max)

If the tabbing out spikes some of these values you can use the plot to see what they were just before you tabbed out

It seems like you went to sleep :))
Oh well.. gonna let you know what I was thinking.. so you can experiment when you wake up :)
In case your GPU clock speeds won't raise to the specified boost clock when gaming.. it might be that you're using either the power saver or the balanced power plans.
Try going to control panel - Power options: set to full performance, then further click advanced power settings and set PCI Express - Link state power management to off
Let me know if it helped

check your CPU temps! Did you say that the cpu fan wasnt running all the time?

Your CPU is running at 800mhz in that screen shot, so i suspect its overheating and thermal throttling causing the bad performance.

Your Unigine valley score is terrible for that card, thats like the score for a gtx 760.

no the cpu fan worked fine. or should i say it didnt seem there was something wrong with it.. anyway I found out I probably didnt download some drivers from intel, I'll do that today. I only downlaoded the ones for the mobo.. could it be causing the whole thing ?

As I said, check CPU temps when running game/benchmark.

Also check its turboing the CPU speed up and not stuck at 800mhz.
