That answer speed was amazing! I think I'll stick with the Sapphire 7970 since they are the same number. Would there be any performance differences if i were to choose a 280 such as this one (would this card work?): http://www.asus.com/Graphics_Cards/R9280DC2T3GD5/specifications/

Is the "x" absolutely mandatory? Since the x-card costs 60$ more. What's the difference anyways? (sorry for being a bit nooby here)

Sorry. The 7970 GHZ Edition = 280x and the 7970 = 280. In your case you don't need the "x" version since it will downclock to the standard 280 speed in crossfire. Since you have the Asus 7970 with the aftermarket cooler I would just get the matching 280 Asus card you linked to. The reference coolers don't cool well and are pretty loud which will be worse in crossfire.

I crossfired a vaporx 7970ghz with a vaporx 280x with no issue for a year or two.
