Hello all,

ive currently got 2 4tb NAS HDDS as follows in my current NAS....
http://www.seagate.com/products/network-attached-storage/nas-drives/

Im moving all my storage to rack mount servers instead of a NAS but the drives seem to be encrypted & apparently need to be formatted before use but im not ready to delete 8TB worth of data.

Any way around this?

Thanks guys.

UHn NO if your trying to 'keep' the data. As you found, because they are encrypted, the data is stores 'inside' the encryption, so there is no way to access the files except to export them to 8TB of other storage media (Tape drives anyone?).

As you already determined in order to reutilize these you will need to wipe them (DBAN is a great tool to do that btw) and reutilize them. Though BEWARE: Depending on the 'server' you may not be able to access all 8GB, it may capp out at 2Gb, 4Gb or 7GB because of limitations on the I/O, BIOS, OS, etc. So do investigate IF that SPECIFIC model, OS etc can actually support that much storage space.

The server is running ubuntu currently. i was under the suspicion that it may just be using ext4 or similar hence why my windows pc couldn't read it....
Ill give you an update in 15 when ubuntu has finished installing
