Sorry for the long post ahead.

I just built my new computer about 2 weeks ago. I have the MSI Z97M-Gaming motherboard. I was using MSI Live Update 6 to see if I needed to update anything on my computer and a MB bios update popped up. I did not know that the bios does not need to be updated, so I downloaded and installed the update.

I noticed my clock speed had changed after the update, so I tried to boot into the bios and saw that the screen is all messed up.

This is what the bios should look like: http://www.custompcreview.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/bios-msi-z97-gaming-7-lga1150-motherboard-custom-pc-review-02.jpg [1]

This is basically what the bios screen looks like now (sorry I don't have a actual picture of my bios screen at the moment, I'll get one tonight): http://i.ytimg.com/vi/Ce6IMS7iIUQ/hqdefault.jpg [2]

I can only see the setting options in my bios but when I click on it, nothing happens; it acts as if it opened the tab I just clicked, but I can't actually see it. If I do not boot into the bios, the computer works fine! I'm using it right now and not having any problems, other than the bios screen messing up.

I tried clearing the CMOS. I disconnected the psu from the wall and disconnected the cord from the psu, turned the psu switch to off. I pressed the case's power button a few times. Then took out the CMOS battery for about 15 seconds, put it back in, then held down the clear CMOS button on the MB for about 5 seconds.

I tried booting back into the bios screen but it is still messed up. However, and I'll say this again, the computer is working fine.

I called MSI technical support and they said I bricked my MB and would need to RMA it. I thought that if I bricked my MB, my computer would not work at all, it would be more than the bios screen messing up.

I know I can flash the bios to an older version but I'm not sure how to do that without being able to actually use the bios screen, or if that would even help at this point.

So I need help. I'm not sure what to do and am trying everything before having to RMA it. Someone help? Please?

Solution
I am using the same motherboard - do not use live update to update bios again please. as stated above download the latest bios here - http://us.msi.com/support/mb/Z97M-GAMING.html#down-bios - and unzip and put on the root folder of a USB drive - boot into bios and load defaults, reboot into bios, and then use M-Flash to flash bios with the file off of the usb drive. Unfortunately with many manufacturers MSI still has an app that allows people to flash bios in windows and these can go wrong too easily. M-Flash is dead simple and I see to many people using Live Update. If you need help please message me

You could also update the Bios in DOS if you think you could handle that

So I actually don't have a gpu yet, it's supposed to arrive tomorrow. As of right now I'm using the CPU onboard graphics (I have an i7-4790k). My current monitor is actually an older Samsung LCD TV (about 6 years old). Currently, I have the TV connected via HDMI. When I boot up the computer, it says the resolution is 1280x720 but when I get to the Windows 8.1 login screen, it says the resolution is now 1920x1080. Once my gpu arrives, I plan to connect it to my Qnix 1440p monitor via DVI-I.

My thoughts are the connection between the TV and computer is messed up, causing the bios screen to load weird, but that's just a thought.

have you tried clearing the cmos to see if the bios will fix itself???
also does f11 have a line to get inot the onboard bios updater,.
in the bios update folder from msi is a dos updater..you need to make a bootable usb stick then run the dos updater

Yeah, or at least I'm pretty sure I did. I did what I said in my OP. I turned all the power off and unplugged the PSU from the wall and unplugged the cord from the PSU and switched the PSU off. I waited a few minutes then took the CMOS battery out for about 5 seconds, put it back in, then held down the clear CMOS button on the back panel. Nothing changed. I suppose I could try it again but leave the battery out longer this time.

TQ tips

Hey. Have you try to re-install the bios firmware? And I have heard that there was a way to put some kind of bios files on a usb drive and put that in a usb 2.0 slot and that is boot up the bios from the usb drive, you can try that en install the bios software when running from the usb drive.

Sorry for my bad english I am dutch
