Copying a Harddrive onto my main PC's HDD (Access Denied)

Long story short, I have a laptop that I bought because it has factory automotive software on it, (we'll call this one laptop #1) I would like to pull the program off and run it on my other laptop (call this one laptop/PC #2). However its a bit more complicated than that. The laptop #1 seems to have a modified OS. It boots directly to a multiboot screen that has the programs and choices for selections. There doesn't seem to be an OS system that is choosable if you will.

My plan is to take the program and make it functional on one of my other computers. Then wipe the HDD on laptop #1 and install a fresh OS, then put the program back onto it. This would allow the computer to become a more powerful tool for me. But I have unfortunately hit a road block. Let me explain what I have done so far.

Laptop #1 is an IBM Thinkpad T30 with an 80GB Hitachi HDD

- Playing around with the bios setting, I have seen a windows loading screen when exiting the bios which has never been there before. This has caused me to believe that Windows XP was used as a base and then modified to run these two programs. The boot loader is MS-DOS like and is similiar to the XP boot menu.

- I have bough IDE/SATA to USB cables and have plugged the hard drive into it and used it with my desktop. Once the drivers finished installing, 3x HDDs appeared next to my C: drive (F,G and H) They must be partitions the Hatachi HDD. Now I can view the files, so my plan is to copy the HDD completely to a folder I made in #2 the desktop's c: drive.

When trying to copy the drive partitions I get an error saying: Cannot Create or replace System Volume Information: Access is denied.

Make sure the disk is not full or write protected.
and the file is not currently in use.

Im not quite sure where to go from here. I have read the following article and it hasn't been much help. I have Win XP SP3 and it wasn't set up like that. I don't have a security tab, and sharing & security brings me to properties for the file.

Any idea how to fully copy this hard drive over? I want to make a copy that is usable, where i can go in and play around with it. Any advice.

You might be able to do that, but you almost certainly won't be able to use the OS and applications from it. It doesn't work like that.

And you generally can't 'take a program' from one drive and just copy it elsewhere, and hope to use it.

What application is this?

You can't move programs like you describe. You must have the INSTALLATION PROGRAM and probably a code if it's not free to install to the new computer.

Copying the partitions are also pointless. You can copy FILES to another PC but it's not possible to copy over partitions and get programs working on another PC.

THIS is how it works:

Installing a program:
1. Have the install file or disc and install it. add code as requested

Moving a program:
Not possible

Installing OS:
1. Have a licensed copy (i.e. W8.1 64-bit OEM) and install from DVD.

Summary:
Again, you can't just "move" programs or partitions. You need to have the install programs. If you want to install a new copy of Windows you don't "move" those between computers either you must start fresh and have an Install Disc, then install the drivers, then programs...

It is DIS, BMW software for diagnosing your own vehicle. I can't tell if it is a hacked version or an original. Maybe a bit more snooping in the HD would allow me to find out which it is. Which is why I don't want to wipe the hard drive just yet. Even if it is a fake, cracked, hacked version it is still working.

Man thats a pain. This software cost over 15,000 dollars to buy from the company. Since I already have it I would hate to loose it. Just to understand what you said 100% clearly. There is no way I could "clone" this hard drive onto another one in the same exact size, or better yet same exact model. And hope it to work like this one?

This is diappointing. But I appreciate the response. It makes more sense now how ive been poking aorund for the past few hours and haven't gotten any further.

With a $15,000 software package, there is almost certainly some sort of registration or license key. This increases the degree of difficulty of what you are trying to do.
And in looking around, I see some versions are 32bit only, and other weirdnesses.

Personally, I'd just leave that laptop as it is, and use it in place.

Finally, if this is a cracked version, we can't help you here.

I understand what you mean. Id just like the ability to have it in a few places. We'll let me rephrase this, is it possible to clone a hard drive, HDD to HDD, using some other method like maybe one of my other computers to get it done. If I had a copy of this stuff in any way shape or form I would be willing to experiment with it.

I heard there was HDD cloning available for those that would like to be able to rescue there HDD if there primary where to become no good.

Possibly yes. But that would also include the actual OS, and whatever else is on that drive. Not just your application.

Many of the existing clone/migration/imaging tools can make an 'image' of that drive. Save that elsewhere in case of need.
But not multiple copies, to be used all at the same time. The OS license comes into play here.

CloneZilla, DriveimageXML. Macrium Reflect...all can make images of that drive.

It is possible to copy programs directly. I've done that many times. No registry problem at all.

Interesting. That's okay though I wouldn't mind having a duplicate of the HDD this way I can keep one original incase the process doesn't go well. And use the duplicate to plan around with and see if I can pull the files I need from it. I downloaded Macrium but have not installed it yet, ill check it out and give it a whirl.

I'm looking for a program that will literally take a whole hard drive and copy it straight onto another hard drive for back up reasons. Without having to make an ISO or anything like that.

Interesting aswell. Id like to know more. Just copied programs from the windows program files folder in C: drive over to your new hard drive?

Yeah..just through a usb.

Copying programs?

Rarely, and certainly not for the program he's talking about.

When programs install, the main program folder is only part of what gets installed. The REGISTRY has many links for each program that are added during the install phase.

It's basically IMPOSSIBLE to simply copy over a folder for most programs especially for a program that requires a serial code.

*Seriously, do you really think you can simply copy and paste a program that cost money to buy from one PC to another?

Why do you think pirated software requires people to hack the code?

Is it possible to undo a solution? I just realized that was clicked by mistake and now it classifies this thread as solved.

I understand what your saying and I agree. But some other applications are easier to go around and get through. Also this is not "current software" so you don't need to pay by the month or whatever to have it updated constantly. And since I wont be using it with the manufacture to solve things I don't think it will be as big of a deal. The usually have cracked files buried in the program files under the registration category like they do for many other programs. I'm just looking to pull it off for my own personal use. There are some folders with installer tagged on them in a different partition that doesn't show up as an OS.

Unselected, per your request.

Regarding copying applications - there is no 100% one way or the other. Some may work, some won't.
Some may work, but have pieces missing. Some may revert back to a demo state, because the registration info is missing.

For a "$15,000" application, I'd bet there is some sort of license key or similar. Where is that? Unknown.

But this conversation is edging into verboten territory. We cannot and will not assist in cracking whatever it is you have.

I hear you. And thanks. Well I figured out how to access the drive so I can play with it from here on. I do thank you all for your help. And you are right there is a registration code that needs to be entered. On a side note I dont believe it is in anyway illegal only because they make you pay for the latest software and once its out of date they do not continue to sell it or support it. It just gets swept under the rug.

Thanks for the help tho guys.

Figured I would ask this here rather than starting a new thread...

Is there anyway to format a hard drive as a removable storage device? I have an external hard drive I use and I used it to clone a hard drive from one computer over to another to play around with it. Now it will only show up as another HDD instead of an external storage device (or removable storage device)

I looked around but could really find an answer to what I am looking to do.

Have you tried formatting it normally?

What do you mean? I have formatted it with partitino wizard and dskmgmt.msc to NTFS and I believe I tried fat aswell but am not sure.

When I did this it shows up as another hard drive disk, next to Local Disk C. When you insert flash drives they pop up in the removable storage section. Its really not a big deal I was just wondering if there was a way to easily format it back. To make it easier to find things.

I just checked my other PC, and its external shows up as just another drive. The OS knows the difference between a flash drive and an external HDD. And treats the external as just another drive.

To make it easier to find, possibly rename it. Something like "Removable_HDD"

It seems fairly obvious to me that if this is $15,000 software then you just ask the vendor how to do what you want to. For that price you expect decent support.

The only reason that you wouldn't want to do that is if you have an illegal copy - a fairly serious offence for something that costs that much. I'm fairly new to this site, but I'm amazed that it has allowed this discussion to participate this far.

The discussion about that software package was cut off a while ago.

Interesting. Yeah I renamed it Toshiba, I could have swore it was the removable format before but it doesn't really matter anyway.
