I currently have 8 gb ram
i7 3770k @ 3.5 4.0 turbo
gtx 970 4gb
I seem to run games at a lower fps than my buddy who has
32gb ram
780 ti 3gb
i7 4770k
I'm not talking about 5 fps, usually around 30 more. While i'm playing a game in max @ 35 hes at 70. or with older games i'm at 150 hes at 200.

Here are screens from my 3d mark score and his:

Would it be worth for me to upgrade my CPU to 5th gen i7 with 6 cores and get atleast 16gb ram with a new mobo? Assuming of course my lack in FPS is coming from the processor not the 970.

My goal from upgrading my computer is to have it be able to run the newer gen games with no problem, games like dying light, GTAV, Rainbow six, and anything coming out 2015-16 after that i'd probably upgrade with another 970.

Solution
for your gpu wait for the 980ti bro. it will be just another month or two. arma series has been weird game since forever. it doesnt use any gpu power. gpu usage will hover around 50 at most. multiplayer is just bad fps regardless of how good your rig is. it is the server side issue

First of all, I'd recommend now to wait for the new Skylake processors (and the price drop for the 1150 processors) as you don't really need to upgrade, instead of wasting money on a new mobo and cpu just for 1 or 2 FPS. Your RAM is OK, could use an upgrade for future proof, but my system only uses more than 8GB when I'm editing and rendering. What could give you more FPS is a second GTX 970. Also remember that the drivers are still a bit new for the 970/980, so the 780ti runs with drivers more optimized for it. Remember also, that a few configurations in your computer and nVidia control panel can make a difference, and reducing a few details like Anti-aliasing for example, can give you a huge FPS boost. I struggle to play on ultra in my GTX 970 with a good FPS (60+), so I normally reduce a few unnecessary things.

i dont know. i upgraded from 3570k to 5820k. difference in single player games are non existent. but in multiplayer games like bf3 bf4 64man. arma 3 rome 2. there is a huge fps jump. if you stream on twitch and render videos n stuff i really recommend the upgrade. though i already had nearly 10k saved up so i didnt mind the price. but if i didnt i wouldnt have upgraded

Thanks for the replies guys, it's just shocking to me that I have one of the newest cards out and yet an older card triumphs me in FPS. Should I buy that 2nd 970 or sell my 970 and get a 980/780ti?

If your PSU has enough power, go for a second GTX 970, no doubt, but remember, some games are CPU intensive, ArmA III for example, uses mostly CPU power but also limits it, pretty wierd, so everyone has a bad FPS, no matter the computer. But in most games you'll have a very good increase of FPS.

I have 850 PSU, I think it should handle it. I guess i'll wait for that 980 ti and just sell my 970, so is WoW a cpu heavy game? Why is the fps difference so big between our systems? I'd understand 5 or 10 since hes got a newer cpu, but 40? that's a bit much.
