Hey everyone, just got the parts for a budget Gaming build for a friend, first off I'll tell you what it will be used for:

Heavy Gaming
Moderate Twitch Streams
Moderate Photoshop
Light Video Editing (if any)
Casual web browsing

Here is the parts list sans the Motherboard and CPU:

CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1866 Memory
Storage: Kingston SSDNow V300 Series 120GB 2.5" Solid State Drive
Video Card: XFX Radeon R9 280X 3GB Black Edition Double Dissipation Video Card
Case: Raidmax Vortex ATX Mid Tower Case
Power Supply: EVGA SuperNOVA NEX 750W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX PSU

Now, surprisingly, I have a little headroom in the budget. Originally I had planned on picking up a G3258 and giving it a massive overclock to around 4.5GHz. But now that it's time to buy, I'm wondering if I should just go pick up an i5 4690k at Micro Center for an extra $140.

I'm not sure about the quantifiable differences I will notice in real computer use, I know that "Future Proofing" is a silly idea, especially with Broadwell around the corner.

So what I'm asking is this: at an extra $140, is an i5 4690k (OC'd to 4.5GHz) going to deliver mind blowing performance increases over a heavily overclocked G3258 (OC'd 4.5GHz)?

What would you buy?

Thank you!

TL;DR: Heres my list: http:// should I go G3258 and save some money, or go all in on an i5 4690k?

R9 280x recommended psu is 600w, although a high quality 550 will work in a pinch if you don't really push the OC.

The MSI pc mate is a good board for entry level oc, plenty of options, but with its power phases, its limited on what most consider a decent OC or higher
i5 4690k is my answer. The biggest difference between the two is the number of threads. Some games don't even run on less than 4 cores(The new Battlefields).
I personally have the ivy bridge version overclocked to 4.7 and I saw a good performance bump in gaming (I run a r9 280) .

If you want to save some money and not overclock, get the entry level i5. You need 4 threads these days, even for gaming.

The pentium is a good cpu, but only dual core. If using single threaded apps, it would be fine, although lack of much Lcache could hurt. For most games now, use primarily 1-2 cores, with bleed over into 3-4, so the pentium will almost be able to keep up with the i5. In game like bf4 multi-player though, it'll get left far behind as those calibre games utilize upto 8 threads/cores.

When it comes to the other stuff, here the i5 will dust the pentium easily. There is just no competition between the dual core and quad core cpus as those apps tend to run multiple threads quite often.

To me, it would be worth the expense to upgrade to the i5.

You would be happier with a Quad Core or even a I3 in Photoshop and Gaming + Recording and multitasking. The G3258 is a nice little gamer chip but I wasn't happy with what it did outside of gaming, anything that wants to use more than 2 cores isn't so stellar in speed on that chip. If you don't want to divy up the extra for a I5 4690K then a i5-4590 3.7GHz for $159 is a good option that does everything well.

Any reason why that PSU over this one? (I know both are highly rated)

Also, how does this MoBo look to you? Seems to have everything I need while staying in budget!

Z97 PC MATE

Also, I appreciate the first hand experience @delaro!

Should easily push an i5 4690k to a 4.2GHz with a 212 EVO right?
