I have a Tp Link TD 8817 adsl modem. This will be plugged into an Asus Rt ac68u router which will then be plugged into an Asus Rt n66u router acting as an access point. I havent actually set this up yet, but was wondering if it will actually work. It's a very large house so the td 8817 will pass the internet connection to the rt ac68u on one side of the house and then from the ac68u to the rt n66u on the other side of the house.

Will this work.

Thanks folks

Yes that should work fine. You may or may not get seamless roaming between WIFI signals. Roaming is very dependent on the client device. Put the two WIFI sources on different channels (4 different channels actually, 2 for 2.4Ghz and 2 for 5Ghz). You can try using the same SSIDs (per band) for the two WIFI points to simplify things. But it does make it more difficult to troubleshoot problems. Make sure your 5Ghz and 2.4Ghz bands have different SSIDs.

The folks over at SmallNetBuilder forum have a very active group supporting alternative firmware for Asus routers.

Thank you very much for your response. Yes the asus routers will be on merlin f/w and seperate channels and ssid's etc. I actually have an isp provided modem router combo and the n66u connected via ethernet as an access point working great currently. As usual the the isp kit is junk and the Asus dsl combo is more expensive than the rt, not to mention that the dsl ver. cant be flashed with custom f/w. It seems seperate devices is the way to go. Just wanted to be clear that adding another device into the signal chain won't cause issue's.

Thank you

When answering a question here, you never know the sophistication of the OP. If you are running MERLIN FW then you are a least a moderately sophisticated user and familiar with SmallNetBuilder. I am often astounded with the tricks that are attempted with selective routing and selective DNS using MERLIN FW.....
