Motherboard not detecting GPU

I have some basic computer building knowledge, but recently helped a friend build a computer, and I'm having a problem with the graphics card. I'm questioning weather the graphics card is dead out of the box, or what. Everything is hooked up correctly, card turns on (Fans spinning), but computer never detects card. Only way to boot is to use the integrated graphics. Any help?

Solution
It might be that the primary display device in the BIOS is set to the onboard one. Unless it's set to auto or pcie the computer never looks for it there and just fires up the onboard one regardless if there is a dedicated GPU installed or not.
