Hi everybody,

Yesterday when I tried to use my external HDD (Toshiba Strore E Basics 1T) it didn't work. When I connect the HDD to the computer I didn't hear any noise (I didn't hear tap tap, clap clap, etc. Approaching my ear to the device, I just heared like the constant and subtle sound of an engine, which is perhaps produced by the power) and the white led didn't turn on. When I touch the HDD I noticed that it is slightly vibrating, I mean, It seemed that power to the device was coming. Besides, after a while, I also noticed that the HDD was warming slightly, as usual. I tried to connect the HDD in 3 computers more and on a smart TV. I used different USB to connect it, and the problem was the same. I tried to recognize the HDD using Linux and W7 but it didn't work. Besides, the hard drive didn't appear in the BIOS and in the W7 disk management either. The hard drive never suffered any blow.

Please, ¿could you tell me how to fix my HDD? ¿Someone can helpe me or at least telle me what is wrong?

Thank you very much in advance.

Well if the problem is with the PCB indeed, even connecting internally won't work, but as I see it right now, besides a data recovery company, that's probably the only option. Just make sure that the drive doesn't have a hardware encryption, because if it does and you take it out of the enclosure, it's very possible that your data might become almost irretrievable even by a data recovery company.

Best of luck with recovering your data. I hope everything turns out fine.
Hey javi11. You did pretty well with the troubleshooting. I have only one questions about this, when you say you've tried it with a different USB cable, was it shorter than 12", because sometimes when a longer cable is used, there are issues with the drive being detected or getting enough power etc.? Having in mind you've pretty much tried the basic stuff, you could also try taking the drive out of the external enclosure and connecting it directly to the mother board with a SATA connection. If the problem is due to the enclosure your drive should be recognized this way and you will be able to recover your data. But note that if the drive is under warranty, if you take it out of the enclosure, this would most probably void it. And last but not least, you could always go for a professional solutions, such as a data recovery company.

Hope that helps.

First of all thank you very much for helping me Boogieman_WD. When the HDD was working I always used a USB cable of another device, which is quite large. I never opened original HDD cable plastic bag because with that cable everything was ok. Of course when I detected the problem, I tried to connect the HDD to other computers, using all the possible USB ports (and using different USB protocol 2.0 and 3.0). After that I opened the original cable plastic bag and tried the same using the Toshiba cable, wich was shorter than the cable that I used to use. Besides, I think that the only thing that work well is the power....

I do not mind losing the warranty, but I would like to recover the content without paying money.
