Like the title says, I get excessive HDD activity when not doing anything on PC, usually when it goes to sleep, and screen turns off. I've googled and couldn't quite find the answer, because most of them say, disable indexing and windows media player network sharing services, which I did, but regardless, I still get excessive activity.
Does anybody know what could possibly be the problem.

My configuration:
Windows 7 professional SP1

intel i3-3240 3.40GHz
8GB DDR 3 RAM
AMD Ati Radeon HD 7700 1GB DDR5

OS HDD Hitachi 500GB 5400rpm

Sounds like a virus or malware to me or spyware.

I do not know what software you use to scan your system so i will give you a list and links. These are what i use when people have an issue like this. But i am not saying you could have any thing at all just a good idea to check.

Ok first thing here is to empty out your Temp folder. This folder tends to hold nasty's stuff when you download some thing. To open go to start menu search for this --> %temp% open this folder in the list. Then in this folder highlight every thing and remove every thing that can be removed there might be one or two items that will not delete.

Now for the list.

OK, so I ran all the tools you suggested, and nothing's different. I mean, it is like the indexing is running, but I've disabled it. The moment I move my mouse, HDD activity stops... Is there any way to see what is using HDD when pc goes to sleep? Something like a log, or anything?

Ok since you ran the software i provided and nothing was found.Let's try some thing different.

Since i don't trust your current user profile.

Let's boot to safe mode.F8 or Delete which ever yours is.

Go to start menu while in start menu click the search box.In the search box open the command prompt.

While in the command prompt Type this --->> sfc /scannow

What this option does is scans system files to see if they are intact. If there are errors it might need done 2 to 7 times depending on how many errors there are.Should only take up to 30 minutes or so depending on how much stuff you got on your system.

Let me know what happens.
