Hi all- I recently but a buffalo linkstation NAS and have some questions about working a NAS in general. I have it all set up and have about 150GB worth of stuff on my computer. I want something that will serve as a backup to my files if my computer were to crash. I suppose I was confused as to what a backup actually is because when I did the backup (which literally took 30 hours to complete), I went into the NAS drive and the backup is just a file itself. I thought it would just copy over the files to serve as a backup. So the Buffalo NAS also has a backup suite and there is a Copy Files option too. I haven't done this yet because again, it will take another 30 hours.

I'm wondering a couple things. First, what would be the best option for me. What I'm really looking for is something similar to how airport and time machine works for apple (I have a windows 8.1 laptop). I want all of my files to be copied over seamlessly and automatically. When I alter a file I want the new copy to be backed up. I think it's harder to find something that will back it up automatically right when it's altered, so even if I had like a weekly backup when it would just backup the files that have been altered. This way it wouldn't take the full 30 hours after the first time, correct?

Can anyone provide any insight into what I'm looking for? Right now the NAS i have does serve as a media streamer and "personal cloud" too. While those are nice features, A) i'm not sure they work that great, and B) they're not necessary. With the way the Buffalo is functioning now I'm just not happy with it- perhaps it will work how I want it to when I do the file copy but before being unable to use my computer for that amount of time again, I wanted to check with the community.

Thanks for any insight.

Windows 8 has this built in. Called File History. You can scheudle it to run every 5min to daily and it will even save different versions of files, so say you mess up a file, there is all the previous versions stored for you to access.

As for 30 hours, how is your NAS connected?

The NAS is connected to my wireless modem/router (it's both provided by the internet company).

The problem with the file history running that often would be that I use my computer most of the time from work. So it would only be able to do the backup when I was home and had my computer turned on. Would there be a setting anywhere that could say "when i connect to this network, look to make sure all the most recent copies are stored"?

Thanks for your reply!
