I'm building a computer and I am planning on getting a 4790k soon but I was wondering if I should wait for the new generation because I heard it comes out soon

It is unclear when/if there will be desktop Broadwell parts. Broadwell has been delayed, and now Skylake is expected to debut in 2nd half of 2015. There is a good chance that Broadwell for desktop will be skipped, and it would only offer an approximately 5% increase in performance over Haswell, as its main push has been for power efficiency for mobility more than increasing performance.

If you can wait for Fall of 2015, I think that Skylake will be worth the wait, but for the reasons above, I would not hold out for Broadwell desktop. If you need the desktop now, the 4790K is a great chip for the time being.

All we have heard about the new generation is that they will start shipping 'mid-2015', so depending on your needs, you may or may not find the wait worth it. It you need something now, get the 4790K, it's still a good processor and worth the money. If you can wait though, it may be worth investigating Skylake (as it's called) when it comes out.

All signs are pointing to Skylake being a significant upgrade from current parts, with some new technologies added. I think it is worth waiting for if you have a desktop currently that is meeting needs.
