I am throwing out a old computer with ram from 2010 for the new one I just built 4 days ago. I have 8 gigs of ram on this new one but 2 extra slots so i am thinking about taking 2 sticks from the old computer before getting rid of it. I have been told that if the ram were to burn out that it has a chance of the memory melting and ruining the motherboard completely, and I would like to know if this is true before shoving 5-6 year old ram into my brand new gaming computer if it is dangerous.

Solution
The ram from 2010 would probably be DDR2. Your new machine would probably be DDR3. Would not work. Plus mixing non matching ram sticks is a fail even if they all are either DDR 2 or DDR3. You want to used matched pairs or four matched sticks if you have four ram slots just for an example.
