GPU gt740m at 93C when gaming AFTER applying Artic Silver 5 thermal compound

Hello everyone,

I have a notebook ASUS N56VB, with a dedicated 2gb video card NVIDIA gt740m. Originally, it came with an i3 3120m processor, which I've replaced with an i7 3610qm. Since it was a little hot when gaming, about 90C, I've decided to replace the thermal compound. The thermal compound used, Artic Silver 5, was applied to the CPU by spreading it on the metal part, and I've used the same method with the GPU. I would like to clear out that first, the remainings of the old thermal compound have been cleaned using cotton swabs embedded in a watered based alcohol at 46C. Before applying the new compound, I made sure all parts where dry and clean. After finishing applying the new compound, I took some time -around 30 minutes- before turning the computer on again.

The CPU temperatures have dropped significantly, which was a success, however the GPU temperature is a little high now... 93C when playing GTA IV EFLC even after a few seconds of gameplay, which worried me a little bit. Honestly, I don't remember if the GPU temperatures where high before applying the compound, since my main concern where CPU temperatures.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks a lot!

"was applied to the CPU by spreading it on the metal part," you probably used too much. You usually just apply a rice grain or pea sized dot to the middle of the cpu/gpu and let it spread when the you attach the heatsink. You want the thinnest layer possible to get the best thermal dissipation, using too much can be just as bad as not using enough.

Whats the actual cooling system. It usually doesn't matter what kind of thermal paste or thermal goop you use. You want a good cpu cooler. But you say this is a laptop so I'd find it hard to get a new cooler for it. But maybe they have some capable for the laptop. I'd only suggest getting a new cooler,194 degrees Fahrenheit is hot. But really look into cpu coolers.

Thank your for your quick answer. I've only applied a small amount, maybe a little more than a grain of rice, like one and half. Then it was spreaded over the "metal part". Regarding the temperatures when gaming, the GPU reaches 93 degrees celsius, close to 199 fahrenheit. I'm afraid the GPU burns out, I don't know what to do...

Getting a new system cooling setup would be recommended.

OK, after previous cleaning, I've reapplied the thermal compound on the CPU and the GPU. This time I made sure to put a little less than the last time, enough to cover all the "metal part". Idle GPU temperatures look good, around 45C. Using games like CSS, the temperature rises up to 80C, but with highly demanding games like GTA EFLC or BF4, maintains 90C with peaks of 94C.
