External Hard Drive "USB Device Malfunctioned, not Recognized"

Maxtor Basics Portable Storage 320gb (SN:2HB1T0BQ)
It draws power, and transfers data through a Y-usb cable.

Was working fine last time I used it. (about a month ago)
Now it gets the "USB Device Malfunctioned, not Recognized" error, and going to the unrecognized usb through device manager it shows code 43.
When Plugging it in, it does whirl up, and light up as usual.

I've tried connecting to different computers, 1 was windows 7, and other windows xp pro.
I've also tried re-installing the USB drivers for windows.

On my win7 computer, after plugging in the external drive It showed 4 different Removable Disk(G,H,I,J) all of which show as having 0 bytes, and when unplugging the drive, the 4 Disk do not go away.

Any help or suggestions are aprreciated

You either need a 2nd SATA...

I've taken the enclosure apart, and removed the laptop seagate drive, However, the only computer I have with the same sata connection cable, only has 1 cable, it does recognize the drive in bios, but I cannot see what's on it, since my drive with OS uses the very same sata cable.

BIOS recognizing theres a drive means the hdd is working right?

You either need a 2nd SATA cable to connect the drive to the motherboard (unless it is an old motherboard with only 1 SATA port), or a USB to SATA cable with power. I bought one of these kits below some years back, and once a year it becomes quite essential- a worthwhile investment.
