I just received my new laptop yesterday. I used the Ethernet/wired connection just fine. Today, I have no connection, but can connect using wifi. The Ethernet connection does not show up in the Network and Sharing Center. Where did it go and how do I get it back? 24 hours with 8.1 and already I have these problems. What happened to the Ethernet adapter. All that shows up is the wifi. Thank you for your help.

Enter your BIOS at startup and make sure your Ethernet is enabled. Perhaps you downloaded a BIOS update that changed some settings. Try disabling it in the BIOS, restarting, reenabling it in the BIOS, and then restarting again. As long as it is missing in the device manager, and there are no unknown devices in the list either, it is likely the device is being disabled in the BIOS or has failed.

Hi Jimmy,

I checked device manager and it does not show up. The Atheros wifi shows up. I did not disable it either. Since I just got this yesterday there have been a lot of Windows updates. I scanned through and did not recognize anything for a driver update. I don't understand how this could just disappear. Any suggestions are most welcome. I have read through and tried some of the suggestions in the forums, but still, no luck. I thought maybe it was a bad connector cord, but the same cord works just fine when I connect it to my wifi router. I just had limited activity on wifi, and flushed the dns and now that is resolved. I like having an Ethernet connection though.
