Hi,

System is shown in signature at bottom of post. I can;t seem to see the M.2 Ultra anywhere. Not sure if it's not working or I need to change a BIOS setting or something.

Please help.

Thanks.

Hi,

I've just checked, and it is set to 'Auto'.

Should I change it?

_EDIT- (I keep editing but it's not changing?!?)

Anyway, this is an M.2 that is mean to work in PCIex4 as it is plugged in the ultra slot

I tried it on 'Force_M2_2: Switch to M2_2', and when i rebooted 2 of my HDD's were no longer showing. I think it is a setting for the other M.2 slot (the slower one)? The slot that uses an M.2 drive but makes it use 2 xSATA connections.

No other system to test it in. It should be compatible, it's the one I've seen tested in reviews.

M.2 Ultra driver is contained in its firmware. You need to install the OS in UEFI mode.

You can select your boot device without entering BIOS/UEFI by pressing F8 key when you turn on the computer.
Select the UEFI boot. Legacy mode doesn't work with that hardware.

As it should be sharing PCIe lanes, does it matter which slot I put my graphics card in?

Also, as I installed Windows 8 on the Samsung EVO 850 SSD in the end, once in Windows should I be able to see the M.2?

Sure,

Basically I had no idea what I was doing. I had not chosen the correct settings in the UEFI. What I did was unplug all HDD's and the Samsung 850 EVO so the only storage in the PC was the XP941. Then I went into the UEFI and set SECURE BOOT to ENABLED (this switches off CSM automatically on my motherboard). I also choose FAST BOOT. Then I plugged my USB 3 stick in which had a bootable version of Windows 8.1 on and started up the PC. Sure enough it offered the M.2 as the install disk. Then I went back to the BIOS and chose ULTRA FAST. The thing would boot from off to windows 8.1 desktop in about 5 seconds or so, much faster than the Samsung 850 EVO. BUT, overall performance seems not as fast. So busy looking into what I may have done wrong and grabbing some bench marks. This is all very new to me and I'm making loads of mistakes but at least I'm gradually learning.

Personally I've never had to tweak the settings on an ASRock Z97 Extreme 6 to get it to boot Windows 8.1 out of the box. I made a very detailed video here covering all the steps from installing the XP941 hardware to all the software tools you need to get Windows booting from a USB drive.

Hopefully it's useful.
