I finally got enough money for a Gtx 970. I have had my eyes on the evga superclocked for some time. But there is also the asus and msi. Currently in amazon the asus is the cheapest. Should I still look into getting the evga sc becuase of the higher clock speed? Or will I even know a difference?? Thanks

EVGA ACX 2.0, Gigabyte G1 Gaming, MSI 4G, Asus Strix, Galax, Zotac... all good quality stuff. There are small differences, I stand with Gigabyte for the great cooling and higher clocks/great for overclocking, but is also a bigger card, a problem for small cases. But any of those brands are highly recommended, just remember to get the best (a little bit more expensive) version, as there are cheaper versions with lower clocks.

Also, coil whine is a bit tricky. Like, if you're in a game lobby let's say, and there you get 500FPS just before you get in the game (ArmA III for example), you'll get coil whine no matter the card in that moment, thats why I use EVGA PrecisionX's FPS cap...
But for normal use yea, that's about luck, any brand can have coil whine, but also you can RMA it if the thing is too noisy.

Don't worry, it's not something that damages the card, but again, use a FPS cap if you find yourself playing a game with 200+ FPS and if you actually hear a noise, otherwise leave it alone. I recommend a FPS cap using a software (MSI afterburner or EVGA Precision X), as V-Sync gives you input lag. But really, relax, especially if you're playing modern games, the optimization is so bad that if you play in ultra you'll hardly achieve 60 fps :/

The MSI version is worth every penny it has better peformance than the ASUS and the gigabyte and beats the EVGA by a little and to mention its amazing cooling

Did you by any chance check the conclusion on your second link?

Conclusion

Overall the best card when it comes down to performance and overclocking is definitely Gigabyte GTX 970 Gaming G1. From its superior 280w max stock power limit, to it's cooling and display connectivity. The card is very well rounded in terms of both features and performance, and takes the lead in pros going for the card. This does not make the ASUS or MSI cards bad choices though! If you're looking for a cool and quiet card my recommendation would be the MSI GTX 970 Gaming G4, as it is on average cooler than the ASUS card, has a higher max power limit for the stock bios, and also has the better idle fan shut off feature*both thresholds are ~60c*. All in all each card has its caveats, whether it be silence, a nice backplate, or serious cooling, each card still performs exceptionally. May Maxwell be with you

Now that you destroyed your own statement, do you still want to stick with: "The MSI version is worth every penny it has better peformance than the ASUS and the gigabyte" ?
I wanted the biggest power boost, and went with the Gaming G1. But to each their own!
