Do I need more power for this?

Currently I have 2x MSI GTX 980 Gamings and I will be possibly grabbing a 3rd one soon.

But I was wondering if my Corsair AX860i will be able to power 3x MSI GTX 980 Gamings and my i7-5930K @ 4.2 GHz 1.25v.

If I need more, I was looking at the Seasonic 1050W platinum or Corsair AX1200i.

I don't want to fork out for another PSU if it won't be required, but I also want to be safe.

It will either be "very" close or not enough, I'd go up to 1000w just to be safe, but also, I'd get Evga supernovas instead of AX1200i, Corsair charges more for lesser watts. You could probably get like a 1300-1600w Evga PSU for the same price for the AX1200i.

Here, the Corsair AX1200i is $250, and this is a Evga supernova 1600w G2 and it is $290.

Corsair AX1200i: https://pcpartpicker.com/part/corsair-power-supply-ax1200i

Evga 1300w: https://pcpartpicker.com/part/evga-power-supply-120g21300xr

Evga 1600w : https://pcpartpicker.com/part/evga-power-supply-120g21600x1

Right now the Evga supernova T2 1600w is the same price as the Corsair AX1500i while Evga gives 100 more watts and they're both Titanium certified. I have had the AX1500i and it worked great but it was actually defective, I'm actually sending it back today or tomorrow.

I think I may grab the Corsair AX1200i because in the future I may end up selling all 3 of my 980's (or 2 if I stick with only 2 for now) to get 2 AMD 390X's if 2 of those give a much better performance than 3x 980's, and those AMD's are rumored to be power hungry.

So I should aim for 1200W for future proofing, agreed?

So you'd rather let them rip you off for lesser watts with the same performance?

How do we quote in this forum? Ugh...

Anyways I am planning on getting a 3rd 980 because even 2x 980 I have so far can still choke ocassionaly in some games @ 4096x2160 on my 4K LG monitor. Im sure adding a 3rd one should net me atleast 10fps more which should make gaming experience at this res feel a bit better.

And I was keen on Corsair because I really like their build quality, I may settle for the EVGA but I also like Seasonic.

Well, if you got the money, I guess why not, just don't say I didn't say anything about it :) And you do know at 4096 x 2160 cuts the edges off by a bit just like at 2560 x 1440, or 1920 x 1080 because it is not at it's native resolution? Also, right now Nvidia GPUs are more for resolutions that's below 4k, such as the 970 or 980, AMD GPUs are more for 4k purposes. But you could always try and see what happens, if it doesn't help that much, you could always get a 4th one or just sell them.

@Lone

Alot of games allow me to play at fullscreen @4096x2160 without cutting the edge with black bars. Thr games that do not allow this I am able to use flawless widescreen which then does it.

If I knew 980s wernt for 4K I would not have got them, too late now. And anyways in the latest 4K reviews the 980 is pretty much on top, maybe they lose one or two games by only a margin to other cards.

And 3 way SLI seems to scale better than 4 way. I have seen some reviews where 4way does not add much if anything at all or its even worse. 3 way seemd to be sweet.

I would prefer platinum over gold aswell.

Which games do you play? There's also platinum Evga PSUs as well. And by cutting the edge, I mean the edge of the "picture" is cut off. I meant the picture is enlarged so much that it won't fit on the screen, not decrease so much that there's black bars.

@Lose

I play many games that work fine, starcraft 2, left 4 dead 2, counter strike go, crysis 3, evil within, dragon age inquisition, watch dogs.

I dont get what you mean the picture is enlarged so big the image is cut? None of the games I play have their image cut, eveything is visible.

Go to your desktop, go to the resolution settings, and change it to 4096 x 2160 unless it is already. Then look at the task bar, the windows icon, the time and date.

Umm my desktop and games have always been naturally 4096x2160 @ 60 hz, and there is absolutely no image cutting, so I am still a bit lost at what you are saying.

I am using Windows 8.1 which has pretty good scaling.

So I was wondering what is the difference between, the seasonic 1050xp3 and the 1050 snow silent in terms of quality. Also there is the 1200xp3 which is the same price as the 1050xp3 on amazon, what is the difference besides higher power and why the same price?
