Upgraded from Windows 8 to 8.1, laptop wifi won't turn on

I've had my laptop, an Acer Aspire V3-551G, since June 2013. Just last night, I finally decided to make the switch to Windows 8.1. After three or four hours of downloading and installing 8.1, and then upgrading to the proper drivers from Acer's and AMD's websites, everything is working perfectly. Well, everything except my wireless chip, a Qualcomm Atheros AR5BWB2222 Wireless Network Adapter. The little wifi switch in the menu is grayed out and I can't turn it on, as pictured below:

I have scoured the internet in search of fixes, and all of the ones I've found have not resolved the issue. I've uninstalled and reinstalled drivers countless times, gone into the BIOS and hit F9 to reset everything to the default values (which they were already at anyway), disabled and enabled the device in my network settings, and yes, pressed the little wifi button (which never did anything but enabled/disabled airplane mode anyway). I get the sneaking suspicion that a USB dongle won't work either, but even if I did get one to work, that's one of my three USB ports relinquished, and I regularly use those for other devices. If all else fails, I have a system image my Dad and I made when we first got the laptop that I can roll back to, but I really want this to be a last resort. So, Tomshardware, what do I do to get my wifi working again?

That's not even close to the source of the problem. My router and modem are functioning perfectly, everyone else in my house is connected just fine. The problem is my wireless adapter.

Doesn't really matter anyway, according to another source, there are no actual functioning drivers for my particular device on Windows 8.1. Microsoft only listed it as a solution because it happened to work for one person and nobody else. I've already reverted back to Windows 8 and I am in the process of reinstalling all of my programs, and my wireless adapter is now functioning correctly again.
