When I turn on my CPU, the LED shows that the CPU is powered on but there is no output to the monitor. I've tried to strip it down to the essentials with only one RAM and no dedicated GPU. The system booted up but struggled to work. Earlier I ran a check on all the components of my motherboard and found that the HDD health was bad (tried with Seatools). The system had unexpected shutdowns earlier for no reason while made me to check the HDD. Here are my system specs:

  • Intel Core2Duo 2.4 GHz processor
    Gigabyte GA-G41M Combo V2.0 motherboard
    Asus Geforce 210 1Gb GPU
    Seagate 160 GB HDD
    1 x 2 GB and 1x 1 GB DDR2 Transcend Ram

Here's what I tried to do and the results from them:

Unplugged everything, disconnected the GPU and cleaned up the all the slots.
Reset CMOS by reseating the CMOS battery.
Disconnected the HDD, DVD-ROM connected only the 2 GB RAM in slot 1. Connected the monitor to internal GPU using VGA cable.
Turned on the CPU and the system booted up but didn't detect the HDD.
Plugged in the HDD and turned on the CPU.
The system booted into windows but took almost 4 times the usual boot time.
Inserted the 1 GB ram into slot 2. The system wouldn't boot.
interchanged the ram slot and still the system didnot boot.
Inserted only the 1 GB ram into slot 1 and the system booted up but got stuck at the windows start screen.
Inserted the 2 GB ram in slot 1 and the GPU, connected the monitor with DVI cable to the GPU.
The system booted up but was stuck at the Windows welcome screen.
Connected the DVD-ROM and tried to format HDD. CPU couldn't boot into any DVD and gave the error message BOOTMGR image is corrupt as i tried booting through DVD.. (Tried booting Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12 and Ubuntu 14.1 installation disks).
Now, the system wouldn't boot into Windows or detect any installation media.

I have no idea what to do after that. Tried goggling for all resolutions for BOOTMGR image is corrupted. Issue is still not resolved. Please help me out.

are you getting any bios beeps when the error happens?
You have not stated if a new or old pc? As in building one... as motherboard could of been faulty.

can you format the HD from another pc?

i would do this:

Have the psu to board only and CPU and fan installed.
Remove all leads for HD / DVD ect
connect the vga from ON BOARD to monitor only.
Boot and check cpu fan ok and see if chip picked up on boot
go to bios and set the time and date only.
reboot and should get a few beeps from bios as of course there is no ram.

If this works, leave for 3 mins and stable.
Next try the 1 gb ram in the first slot, boot
should get no media, as no drive. turn off
connection then only dvd drive and boot, go to bios and see if dvd was picked up as master or slave. put boot to cd first
try a disc in it and boot. if boots and cd read, re are getting somewhere, of course cant install from disc as no HD but testing ide/sata cables

now add HD, boot, go to bios, check if HD listed and boot cd/dvd then hd as second

and test

The PC is a 7 year old PC but the motherboard was replaced about 3 years ago and the HDD was replaced about 4 years ago. I'll try to boot the pc with the processor and PSU alone and see what happens. BTW, the BIOS detected the DVD drive. After i pressed a key to boot into CD/DVD option during the boot, the BOOTMGR Image is corrupted message came up.

Apologies me for the late reply. I've tried troubleshooting as you've suggested. I've kept only the CPU on board and connected the display only to the internal graphic card. The system didn't give any beep but wouldn't display anything. Then tried plugging in only with the 1GB Ram in slot 1. The computer booted up and gave the message that no media is detected. Then I've connected the DVD ROM which was detected as the slave. Checked the installation disk without the HDD connected and the disk showed the installation page. Connected the HDD and booted through CD/DVD with Windows installation disk in it. The computer booted into the installation menu. Reformatted the entire HDD and installed windows with 2GB ram instead on 1GB ram. The installation was smooth. Connected the 1GB ram in slot 2 and booted the system. The system booted just fine. Updated the drivers and then connected the external graphic card. Installed the Geforce 340.52 WHQL driver and restarted the system again. The system lagged compared to the earlier situation without the internal graphic card but later showed no signs of lag. Transfer rate was about 25 mbps on USB 2.0 port. Checked the HDD with Seatools and it failed only the long generic test. After that the system took long time while being stuck at the start screen where it gives options for entering BIOS or changing boot type. After some time, the system wouldn't boot at all. The DVD ROM seems to work fine. I'm worried if the HDD/ the motherboard would've gone faulty.

I've contacted Gigabyte support team and they've mailed the following:

Thank you for your kindly mail and inquiry. We suggest you to test your memory in another system to see if they work fine. If possible, we suggest you to use verified memory in the memory support list. Next, please install only the CPU and 1 RAM and try to boot into BIOS. Please use Q-Flash utility to update the BIOS to version FB from our product page. For more information about BIOS update, please click here.

From the error message you provided (BOOTMGR image is corrupted) may be caused by several reasons:

1. The DVD is corrupted. Please test other DVD.
2. The optical drive cannot detect you DVD. Please change an optical drive to see if it help.
3. The hard drive does no work properly. In this case, please change a hard drive.

If the problem remains after the steps above, we suggest you to contact your supplier for further testing to verify the root cause. Thank you for your cooperation.

Regards,
GIGABYTE

BOOTMGR message no longer appears now. I've updated the BIOS recently and the DVD ROM seems to be working fine as of now.

I've ran CHKDSK but couldn't find it's event report in event viewer. Tried it twice. But as per Seatools my HDD failed the long generic test.

Yes, I've tried with 2GB RAM and onboard graphics. It booted up properly I've also formatted the HDD. I've also noticed that the HDD was making noise when it is in operation.
