Hi, I am planning on playing games on 1080p. Was wondering which will be more worth it? I'm am trying to keep my GPU budget within this range, but would it be worth it to grab an R9 280X or a GTX 970 even? Any replies would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

The GTX 960 is significantly slower than the R9 280X and the GTX 770. It's about on par with the R9 285 and R9 280, and thus a little faster than the GTX 760.

In Tom's Hardware's review, even a factory overclocked GTX 960 was well behind the 280X and 770. Techpowerup found the same, though the differences are slightly smaller.

In Battlefield 4 for example It's 3GB VRAM and mantle is really going to take the upperhand. I would definitely take an R9 280x over the GTX 960 in general though.

the FPS in GTX 960 is higher, but when you use beautifull anti aliasing such ass SMAA, MSAA and SSAA i doubt gtx 960 can match other card since they use 128bit bus.

960 is the least valued card, r9 285 is definitely beat 960
the right order is 290x>970>280x>285>960
the price is 970>290x>280x>960=285
the answer is clear 290x if in the budget, if not then 285

The r9 280 doesn't beat the GTX 960 in most games, so I doubt the R9 285 does. It's suprising how underrated the GTX 960 is.

The R9 285 is slightly faster than the R9 280. But it's too small a difference to matter, they are both essentially on par with the GTX 960 (a little slower at lower resolutions, but the memory bandwidth holds back the 960 as resolution goes up).

I agree - gtx 960 is great AND ON par with 280 and 285 its funny how 80% of people say "280 WAY BETTER ZOMG"

The GTX960 is on par with the 280/285, but it is $40 more expensive.
The R9 280x is faster than the 960 for the same price.
The R9 290 is WAY faster than the 960 for $40 more.

I couldn't possibly recommend the 960 to anyone unless you are trying to upgrade an OEM system with a 400w psu. It is a terrible value otherwise.

u said the 960 is a terrible value? try again the evga gtx 960 super-SC 2gb acx 2.0 =199-220$ range right now has higher bench marks then even the oc 285 and the 280x, and those are going for around the same price and slightly higher, The 960 is the underdog but def the better buy for the average gamer, and the average gamer is 90% of all games lol

The GTX 960 is $30 more expensive than the R9 280 and 285, but performs no better as I've already demonstrated with benchmarks. That means the GTX 960 is worse value, though it does have one advantage in its lower power consumption.

The GTX 960 is in no way higher priced than both the R9 280 and R9 285 and is decent value as it performs better than both graphics cards at 1080p.

Video Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 960 2GB Video Card ($192.71 @ Amazon)
Video Card: XFX Radeon R9 280 3GB Double Dissipation Video Card ($189.99 @ Micro Center)
Video Card: Gigabyte Radeon R9 285 2GB WINDFORCE 2X Video Card ($192.98 @ Newegg)

I got my 285(gigabyte windforce) for $170 after rebate, all the 960s were $200 after rebate, so a 285 can perform a little bit better than a 960 at $30 cheaper.

If you don't want to acknowledge rebates, then let's look at a market where they aren't common. The UK. Where the R9 285 is available for £131, while the GTX 960 costs £160. That's more than a $40 difference once you convert the currencies.

Face the facts, the GTX 960 costs more than its direct competition.

Actually, the 280/285/280X cards aren't cheaper everywhere...I was debating the purchase between a 960 and 280/280X,the prices in my country are as follow:
GTX 960 2GB GDDR5 MSI OC-230$
Sapphire Radeon R9 280 DUAL-X BOOST 3GB DDR5 -230$
Sapphire Radeon R9 280X Vapor-X Tri-X OC, 3GB GDDR5-275$
Gigabyte Radeon R9 285 OC, 2GB GDDR5-250$
Just throwing it out there...
