Wireless connection keeps dropping out

Hey,

I'm trying to restore an old computer for my parents to use just for simple web browsing/editing documents. I tested it out with the windows XP that was installed on it and it was practically unusable. I noted that every 5 minutes or so the internet connection would drop out. I installed PeppermintOS (a user-friendly, lightweight linux distro) and although everything runs a lot faster, the dropping out still seems to be a problem.

I am using an Realtek wireless network adapter, and the router is on the other side of a pretty big house. I don't think this computer was ever connected to a wireless network before so it could be a longstanding issue.

I'm pretty confident it's a network card issue; there are a tonne of other devices connected to the wifi without any problems.

Any ideas?

Well, I am on my laptop right next to the desktop right now and haven't experience any trouble. I looked at the wifi analyzer and it fluctuates between -70 and -80 signal strength. Also, it's almost entirely overlapped by another signal.
