Solution
You should not install or use Windows XP unless you want to be hacked. If you want a similar interface, you might try linux mint. It has a very basic Windows XP like look.

Often if you reinstall using disks from the manufacturer you do not even need to enter a key.

Yes. Do you have the key of the XP install that was originally on the laptop? If not you'll need a key.

I would recommend against installing XP though, as the security updates have stopped, and vulnerabilities that are discovered will no longer be patched.
