How do I prevent DOS attacks? Is this even a DOS attack?

So recently, around 11 pm every night, give or take 2 hours, my router has stopped working for 10 minutes, and I may have figured out why. I checked my router's logs, and I have been apparently getting Smurf DOS attacks from various IPs. I've traced the IPs, and the "attacks" are coming from China. Is this a false diagnosis of a problem that's actually different from a DOS attack? Restarting my router does not fix it, nor does connecting to it on LAN. No computer in my house is capable of getting internet connection during the 10-minute "attack" period, and there doesn't seem to be a solution other than to let it run its course. All computers can connect to the router, it's just that the router cannot connect to the internet. My router is a NETGEAR WNDR4500. If anyone knows what's going on or if this particular router often has problems like that, I'd love the help.

If you couldn't tell by my post, I'm still not entirely convinced this is a genuine DOS attack, because I've rarely ever heard of random consumers being targets of them. I just have no idea what else the problem could be.

You should address this to your ISP. For example, one of my ISPs used to remotely reset my connection every night at around 22:30 (and that was the time that the whole family crawled out of they rooms to have a chat).

Does rebooting the router change your WAN address? Do you do something to "anger" someone (e.g. you are streaming a game, or playing an online game and upsetting someone)? Ot it might be that you pi&&ed off your neigbour' kid and he is playing "big guns" with you?
