New computer: FPS-drop issues

Hello,

I have recently bought various parts and built a new computer that was mostly intended to use for gaming. It has the following specifications:

Intel Core i7-4790 3,6GHz 8MB Socket 1150 Boxed
EVGA GeForce GTX 680 2GB DDR5
HyperX Fury DDR3 1600MHz 16GB
MSI Z97 GAMING 5, Socket-1150
Samsung SSD 840 EVO 120GB OEM

Cooler Master G650M, 650W PSU
Seagate® Desktop SSHD 1TB

The issue is that I am experiencing FPS-drops in the games I play, even when selecting low/medium graphics settings. The problem becomes a lot more apparent at medium/high graphics settings. This includes games such as League of Legends, Counterstrike: Source, Farcry 4, Borderlands 2. When selecting anything but the lowest settings I get spikes where the FPS drops - everythings is just laggy. This happens in multiplayer games as well as single player games (i.e. Farcry 4, Borderlands 2).

I have tried the following:

  • ■ Format the computer and do a fresh install of Windows. I have tried Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 - same problem.
    ■ The graphics card MSI GeForce GTX 760 - same problem.
    ■ Upgraded from 500W Power Supply to 650W Power Supply - same problem.
    ■ Both the newest Nvidia drivers as well as older versions. I have also updated all other drivers, including flashed BIOS to newest version - same problem.
    ■ Install games both on the SSD-drive and the SSHD-drive - same problem.


Do you have any ideas on what the issue might be? I would think that the specs of this computer should be enough to run especially games like LOL and CS:GO on ultra graphics without any FPS-drop - but maybe I am wrong?

Can I use MSI Afterburner with my EVGA graphics card? (I am no longer in posession of the MSI card)

If so I will do it later and post the results.

You can use MSI Afterburner with any card.
Check on Youtube on how to use "On Screen Display" with the MSI tool in order to view this data in game.

Also, you said that you have FPS drop, but you didn`t mention your average and minimum FPS. What`s the FPS difference when you notice the drop?

Thank you. I will try it as soon as I get home from work and post the results.

Regarding max/min fps: To use League of Legends as an example (with VSYNC off) I will have about 200-250 FPS, and it will consistently drop to about 20-30-40.

So I tried to start Far Cry 4 with MSI Afterburnger. The results were the following (during intro):

I couldn't believe that the CPU temp was actually 100 degrees celcius. So I shut down my computer and entered BIOS to double-check whether MSI Afterburner was getting wrong readings - result: CPU: 99 C, Motherboard: 35 C.

I then shut down my computer to check the CPU fan (stock). Embarrasing as it is, the CPU fan wasn't properly attached (a bit loose). After attaching it the CPU temp immidiately jumped down to about 60 C. This is the result after properly attaching the CPU fan:

So it seems having a CPU fan attached helps a lot with the FPS. It is still a bit low in Far Cry 4, but I've heard that game requires quite a bit. Most importantly, the game doesn't feel laggy anymore.

Thank you so much for the help, I doubt I would have even noticed this without the software your recommended! Now let's just hope having no proper cooling for a month hasn't damaged my CPU too much. Still don't understand why my PC didn't automatically shut down even once if the temperatures were so high constantly... :)
