Hi!

I'm getting the Haswell-E system, with the GTX980. I will use it mostly as a workstation (for 3D), and also for playing new games occasionally.

I have decided to keep the old system as a backup, and perhaps run a game or two on it while new system is busy rendering. :)

Titles I'd play are Warframe, Arma 2 Dayz, perhaps even Arma 3.

Current specs on old rig are:
Gigabyte P35-DS4 mbo
Intel Q6600 @2.8GHz (slight OC from stock 2.4)
4GB DDR2
MSI 8800GT 512MB
monitor is old 19" Philips 190c
64-bit Win 7

I was thinking to perhaps get a Radeon R7 250X for this old setup, however R7 is a PCI-E 3.0, so I have no idea if it can fit on my MBO or not.

What would be your advice for a ~ 100$ max upgrade?

Solution

The PSU is fine. The GT 730 is a entry lvl card but will work well. I would of recommended the 750ti but I haven't seen one around 100$ I think the R7 250X is your best bang for the buck.

Go for the R7 250X, its a good GPU for the price and right now you can get a free game with it.

Alright. Is it compatible with the PCI-E 2.0 I got on my motherboard? Also, (maybe I'm asking too much from this system), would the q6600 be a bottleneck for this card?

If it would, I'd rather get something even cheaper that this CPU would be able to fuel

It should work fine for that MB. PCI-E 3.0 or 2.0 GPU's will work. Another cheap option would be the 64-bit version of the Nvidia GT 730 @75$ and free shipping.

Thanks! I take it, GT 730 is still much better option than the old 8800gt for any game? :)

Once I'm done with getting the new system, I will see with how much money I'm left. I'm still leaning towards the R7 or even the GTX 750, however gt 730 seems ok as well.

Thanks for suggestions!

ps. 520W Corsair HX should suffice for any of the 3, right?
