Can anyone point me in the direction of anything that would tell me if I'd be wasting my time putting a USB 3 card in my PC, given that it has the Asus P5Q Pro mobo?

Cheers

Just know to get full USB 3.0 bandwith, you need at least a pcie 1.0 2x connector (500MB/s), or a pcie 2.0 1X connector (same 500MB/s), or better. The P5Q motherboards have one pcie 2.0 16x connector (blue), two pcie 16X (black) that have limited bandwith (8X ?) and for the small ones, those are pcie 1.0 4X and 1X connectors. The only one fast enough is the 4X connector (BUT you have 4X speed ONLY IF no 1X connector is used, or else the 4X speed is limited to 1X). Good to know if you want to connect a fast external SSD (with speeds close to 500MB/s) through a USB 3.0 pcie adapter. If you use a small pcie connector, it could be limited to 250MB/s (and that's already a theoritical maximum speed).
