Hi,

I found many cpu led cases but none like this one: the boot process goes normally and windows even boots up. But a few seconds after the log in screen comes on - everything goes black and the cpu led turns on. I can shut the machine down only by using the switch on the PSU. Do you guys have any ideas?

Here's more info:
OS: Windows 8.1 x64
CPU: AMD FX x8 8320

Only the MB is new, all the other stuff was working just fine with my old MB

yes i checked for all of those things. the latest bios version came pre-installed. also, i'm thinking if it was a mechanical issue or a supported hardware issue, it wouldn't have gotten past initial self test.
One more thing i should mention is that i can boot in safe mode just fine. This makes me think that this might somehow be a driver issue but the windows event logs are pretty much useless, no info there

OK i think I'm onto something. I now see that my BIOS reports 48C for the temperature of the processor which is pretty weird since its not doing anything. I must admit the thermal paste was old but I thought I could get away with it. I guess i should by some, apply a new layer and see how that goes. In the meantime I'm still open for other suggestions.

Yes I did. My HDD is partitioned and the windows installation resides on a dedicated partition. I formatted the system drive too but to no avail.
I also bought a new CPU fan, changed the thermal paste and... nothing.

My next ideas are:
1. try and install windows 7 and see what it has to say
2. same as 1. but with linux mint
3. throw PC ouf of a window

Yes, of course, right away...but to no avail...

The latest update is: I am able to log in and use my windows installation as long as i don't install the video drivers. When I try to, I get that black screen again. I tried with Catalyst 14.12 and the previous version - 14.9. Now I'm wondering if that's a video issue or a MB issue.

I'm still open for ideas

Tried installing windows 7 and using the catalyst drivers for that platform but again - same black screen and CPU led on.

Next steps - try using a different video card for testing

OK, FINALLY A SOLUTION! It turns out the problem was in the PSU all along. I was using the one from my old machine. It was a really nice Fortron Everest 800W but I guess 4+ years of service were more than it could take. After I changed that with a new one everything worked like a charm.
