I have read various ways to fix this issue on here, but it all comes down to one issue... I can't get windows to boot, the pc came with windows on it, but the motherboard died a horrible death, so I had to install a new one... now I can't get windows to boot, can't get to safe mode menu either, just goes to the screen where the little lights come together to make the windows icon, and then bsod and crash... I am using
windows 7 64 bit home premium
HP slimline was the previous pc
new Mobo by Asus
I know it has to do with device drivers... but I need a disc or to rebuy windows (I have spent enough already for being on disability) so what might my options be?

If you need more info, let me know :) thanks in advance for the help!

Solution
Motherboard is directly tied to the OS. New mobo - new OS; Theres no way around that, there are very rare exceptions but in those cases it either works or it doesn't. So if you get a BSOD that means it doesn't work and there is no way for you to fix it.

Using the official way:
Phone Microsfot support and see if they can cancel your license on the old mobo and activate it on the new mobo; Depending on version of windows and and M$ relationship with the OEM of your PC - you might get lucky and solve it with a phone call - just make sure you have your serial and stuff (should be on the PC or in the box the PC came in)

Unofficially:
"borrow" windows from a friend. We all know lots of friends have windows...

Alternate:
If not hardcore...

You original OS(from HP) is tied to the original mobo, as are all OEM's - HP, Dell, etc., at a minium, you would need to do a fresh install to get it to boot, then you would most likely have to call Microsoft, & explain the original mobo failed & hope they will activate. The 'proper' way is to get the same mobo, & it windows would run.

I figured that... don't want to lose my files, so I guess I will need to make a new partition to do that eh? So... "acquire" windows and then add it?

You can download a free 'iso' from Digital river (microsoft's partner that sell OS's on line) do a clean install, activate it w/ the HP key, it'll probably fail, but give you a code & the # to call MS to officially activate it.
Just make sure you download the same version you had.

If not hardcore gaming them forget about win7 or 8 and just go Linux.
Ubuntu for example is probably better than windows on doing general purpose tasks, office, and even a little bit of gaming - ALL valve games on steam are ported to linux and work flawlessly.

Window 10 is currently a 'test' version, not necessarily what you'd want important data on. When MS does release the official version, the 10 version will shortly become deactivated. Win10 will be a free upgrade to Win 7 or 8.1. The 'test' version will not be upgradeable.
