Well, I have been growing out of my video games recently...but do still like to occasionally sit down and play a few in the evening now and again. Recently I have been playing games like Far Cry 4, Borderlands Pre Sequel, nothing out of the ordinary. However as of late, the following problem has been occurring: I'll play my selected game (and this is ANY game) for about 20-30 minutes at 60 fps.. it will run absolutely fine. Then after the 20-30 minute mark, without altering any settings, my FPS will drop from about 60 to about 6. Can't really figure out whether the problem is CPU based or GPU based, or whether I have a nasty virus on my PC that is causing this to happen- but I know for a fact that it is nothing to do with the game or the power of my PC. Is it overheating maybe? I have never tried to overclock, and until 2 weeks ago this problem was non-existant. Was wondering if anybody knew if this problem is CPU based, GPU based, down to a virus etc. Has this happened to you before? If so, how did you go about solving it? I have GTX 660, 8GB of RAM, an FX 6350 CPU and an ASUS motherboard. Was contemplating an upgrade pretty soon from my 660 to a 960 soon anyway. Would that solve my issue? Could it even be a PSU gone rogue? Any responses will be very much appreciated....many thanks again. I'll also add that my CPU is underclocked at the moment because at full clock my PC turns itself off during games. Is this due to a BIOS setting. I just don't have a clue.

"I'll also add that my CPU is underclocked at the moment because at full clock my PC turns itself off during games."

Very very likely an overheating issue, your whole situation, monitor your CPU and GPU temps at idle and during load (gaming) with HWMonitor Pro (enable it's log feature), or AMD Overdrive for the CPU + GPU-Z for the GPU, you shouldn't need to underclock your CPU when everything is right.

Post back with results.

Wow Thanks so much for all the responses already...you guys are awesome....Its pretty late here so I'll get all those results posted up tomorrow morning. Never thought of overheating that much as PC doesn't ever feel that hot.
Thanks anyway...results will be up soon.

Have Downloaded HW monitor and AMD overdrive now....don't know if adjusting fan speeds on CPU and GPU might help but Ill test to see if overheating is the problem first

Hey, thanks again for your support (both of you)- my PC is now running at full clock and the problems with the games have stopped ( as far as I can see) - just had to adjust a few fan settings etc.
