I am trying to connect my Xfinity Cisco wireless gateway/router to a net gear 16 port gigabit Ethernet switch. When I do this, devices connected to the netgear switch either cannot connect to the internet or experience extremely slowed/delayed response. When I connect my latopt directly to one of the gateway ports and run speedtest, I have no problem. Download speed is 100mbps. Is there any set up I need to perform to connect a switch to the router to enable traffic through the switch?

Is the Cisco or Netgear switches managed? If they are, they usually have an assigned IP address that could be creating conflicts.

Usually on a home network, the router is 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1. Managed networking equipment should be assigned .2 - .9 (last octet of the IP), and then you setup servers with .10 - .19, printers at .20 - .29 and computers at .30+ (THIS IS FOR EXAMPLE ONLY). You will need to setup the IP addresses on the XFinity router by mac address.
