Port Forwarding Problems

Hello all,

So half a year ago I undertook learning to do port forwarding so that I could play Minecraft with my daughter in a private server. It all was working fine, but then we didn't play for a few months, I had to get a new motherboard, and now it will not connect. After looking around, I've noticed that the online websites that test ports say that the needed port is no longer open. I have checked my router and the same rules are there to forward the 25565 port, and my firewall exceptions are there too. I've even tried with the firewall off. It still says that my ports are closed. Any ideas? What should I try next?

Since you mentioned changing the mainboard, it's likely the router doesn't see your PC as the same device under the same rule unless you've set the PC up with the same static IP. Have you set up your PC (and your daughter's) with a static IP that matches the forwarding rule?

Remember also that those online port checking tools are not always accurate. It's probably a good idea to try out Minecraft and see if you have connectivity

Ok, well, I tired setting static ISP, followed a tutorial, and then I lost internet connection... So I went back to automatic for now in order to get back on here. Not sure what went wrong, I believe I followed the same steps I have done in the past.

EDIT- I went back and changed the IP and now have internet with Static IP, but all sites still says it is closed. Then I went back to try Minecraft and it worked. Not sure what gives there...

when you changed your motherboard, you had to reinstall windows right? Did you put anything else on like a 3rd party firewall, norton internet security, etc? Could be a prob. If you gave us a layout of your network, would be really helpful also , for instance:

How is it physically laid out, cable modem to 2 pc's hardwired? Wireless? any hubs, etc?

What is your ip addressing scheme on all your machines (open cmd prompt, type ipconfig, get ip address, subnet mask, and default gateway.

If you can ping each machine back and forth, then you should have proper connectivity, and i mean if the router says open, then it should be 'open', so..likely it's not in the router, but if you are up to it, you can 'reset' most routers with a little button on the bottom, this loads all defaults, which means you would have to set up the network, open ports again, but it would 'reset the router'

I'm sure it's fixable, between resetting the router, testing connectivity and getting some more info, can think of more.
