I've seen a lot of people compare and some even use Pfsense with untangle. But, to my knowledge most of the good features from untangle have a cost, some recurring.

I then discovered sophos. Which appears to be a gorgeous UTM. But, I'm curious if anyone has experienced both and is willing to give their own hands on review/opinion.

pfsense i can tell you i'm very happy with it. it's (almost) free to use and it supports older hardware too. in my case i just took an older pc i didn't use and voila, 1 week of testing and installing later i had myself a router/firewall that behaved soo much better than any off the shelf routers i had used before.

my advice? give it a test, install 2or 3 virtual machines as clients behind it and a pf sense image routing and see for yourself. you can then get more packages for it, experiment around with it. once you're happy, just export your config, restore it to a brand new install on a physical pc, let it download the extra packs, e voila, you're done.

i think it's great for any small/medium businesses or large-ish home lans.

I do know how good pfsense is. I've been using it. But, I'm curious as to how the 2 would compare. I see so much comparison of Pfsense and Untangle as I mentioned, but none of it and Sophos. At least nothing up to date. I understand sophos is quite a different type of item altogether being a UTM and most features to reach a level require packages. But, Pfsense even recently removed their wiki and I'm not spending a hundred bucks on something like that right now.
So, I'm just curious if people have hands-on with both and if I could get their pros/cons of both.

So, here's another question for you users. I know Pfsense can do it. But, it's sloppy to setup and I'm still learning. How would one setup a VPN like PIA for ALL traffic except server traffic like Plex and related. I'd like to encrypt everything I have except that which simply cannot be. Video games, plex, vent server, and so on.
