Hi,

I'm running a Intel Core2 Quad Q6600 with Windows 8.1 64bit (in an Asus P5W DH Deluxe Mainboard, Northbridge Intel i975X rev. C0, Southbridge Intel 82801GB rev. A1, AMI Bios 2801, 4 x 1GB Corsair DDR2 DIMM, Samsung SSD).

This setup is running very fine.

I bought a Q9650 CPU last week (http://ark.intel.com/products/35428/Intel-Core2-Quad-Processor-Q9650-12M-Cache-3_00-GHz-1333-MHz-FSB) which is compatible to the mainboard since BIOS Versio 2103 (http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P5W_DH_Deluxe/HelpDesk_CPU).

On http://www.intel.com/support/processors/sb/CS-034255.htm Intel states that this CPU is Windows 8.1 compatible because it supports "Execute Disable Bit"

When I exchange the Q6600 by the Q9650 CPU the BIOS recognizes the CPU correctly. But windows does not load, it stops with a blue screen which states "Unsupported Processor" and then reloads repeatedly.Image

Only once windows loaded normally with the Q9650 but after that not again.

I also tried a second identical mainboard with Bios Version 3001 but I got the same issue, the pc reloads the whole time.

When I put in the Q6600 again everything is running fine.

I already checked the https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows8_1-windows_install/windows-81-does-not-run-with-q9650-cpu/9c5c3ae2-4e60-4c67-a677-731f54e0cd23?tm=1422130205755 thread but I think the guy had a different problem there.

Does anybody know why windows does not support this CPU?

Yes, but will you buy a used or a new motherboard? I checked on Newegg and no new socket 775 motherboard supports 4x1GB DDR2 memory modules. An option is to find a used motherboard; as long as it fully supports your CPU and 4 DDR2 memory modules, it should meet your requirements (check the manual to make sure or post the make/model here). I prefer P45 motherboards, but used ones often are expensive.
Had you taken a few minutes to check the FAQ before buying that 45nm CPU, you would have found this:

I’ve recently bought a Intel 45nm Yorkfield CPU Q9650. When I put it onto my P5W DH deluxe, everything is perfect, but L2 cache size shows 0 KB in BIOS. When I check it in CPU-Z, the problem persists. How do I re-solve it?

Due to chipset limitation, i975X chipset is not able to support all the features of 45nm CPU. The following is a list of the limitations:
1. VT function does not work.
2. The maximum FSB is capped at 1066MHz.
3. 0.5 CPU multiplier is not supported.
4. L2 cache size is not recognized correctly. However L2 cache is still functioning.

As long as you use a 65nm CPU you'll be able to run Windows 8.1.

The Intel i975 chipset does not fully support second generation Core 2 CPUs and this can mess with some operating systems. You'll need to replace your motherboard with one from the Intel 4 series.
