Is the HD 7990 still a good card?

So my current AMD build has been having some issues with the GPU overheating.
I have a friend who is no longer needing his HD 7990 because of him going to Nvidia 980's (I don't know why but he must have some reason) My main concern is people talking about it roasting their motherboards and requiring monster PSU's, but I felt my AMD rig needed some upgrading since it hasn't had any work really done to it since I moved to Intel and nvidia. My current R9 290X is great except for the fact that I have it OC'ed and it hits 90c. I only have to pay a small price for the 7990 or maybe I could just watercool the 290X so I need some opinions on what to do.

This was one of my first builds and recently it hasn't got much attention but maybe a less hot and noisy system will make it used a bit more. I may also add in an extra 8gb on RAM since people always look at that as a downside for some reason

Solution
i would if i could afford it but im running 2 xfx's 290x double d's i dont have the heating issues but i dont oc either but ive got a full atx case an massive air flow ive never seen above 74c though optimal 290x's are designed to run 90c-95c toss up i suppose but water is always nice get good fans for water cooler though stock ones are noisy

I also know that that build idea for a 7990 would be great it's just that I am worried it will be even more hot and loud

Oh and more about these cards for a general idea-->http://gpuboss.com/gpus/Radeon-R9-290X-vs-Radeon-HD-7990

Dear Captainzach,

Right now the GTX 970 is the best card for its money in the world. Therefore I've compared benchmarks between the 970 GTX and HD 7990 for you here: http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/1074?vs=1355

As you can see, the HD 7990 does not lag very far behind the GTX 970. The HD 7990 outperforms the R9 290X by as much as 30% in 1080p games, but the R9 290x is better at higher resolutions. It therefore depends what resolutions you want to run. Ref: http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/1074?vs=1056

So to answer your original question: The HD 7990 is still a good card, even compared to the latest "good cards".

So when I get down to the Delta Percentages the R9 290x basically ties with Hd 7990, correct?
Or are Delta percentages something I shouldn't worry about and just get the 7990?

The R9 295X2 is the single most potent GPU today for 4K and 5K resolution. Although, it shares the same weakness as the R9 290X - overheating. The best thing you could do is probably get some sort of water cooling to ensure that the GPU no longer overheats, but apart from that I don't know what else you could possibly do.

I think I will just leave the 290x out of the game since it sounds like a hair-dryer on load, just tested it right now

OK I will just stick with the 290x and find someone who can help me put a waterblock on it, I mean I was gonna pay 300$ for the 7990 anyway (at least it wasn't retail:p) because I liked the 290x just not the heat issues, plus this is just for my AMD rig until they make a new CPU platform and the R-300 series comes out
