I am running Vista Ultimate... all up to date with with service packs etc.

Three days ago the display started displaying vertical lines. I zoomed it to graphic card video memory. I then wired it to on-board VGA port. And it would not boot at all, not even safe mode. In safe mode the last driver loaded is cbvd.sys. Then it just sits there saying 'Please Wait...'

I tried to repair it with Recovery Disk and it could not repair. Tried to restore it to 5 different checkpoints, it reports 'System restore failed due to unspecified error. System cannot find the file specified (0x80070002)

I have just burnt PCLinux disc to try and pull my files out.

I am running out ideas and would appreciate all help. Thanks in advance.

What you may have happening is probably that the drivers for your add-on video card are the only ones installed in Windows. Also, your motherboard could also not be 'seeing' your on-board video as enabled. Both of these will cause major problems for Vista not being able to boot at all, even so far as your motherboard not POST-ing correctly.

You can get into your CMOS/Setup can't you? You mentioned using a Linux boot CD.

I would make sure that the video is set to the onboard video adapter first. It might even be a good idea to choose the default system settings if there is an option for that.

Further, this will probably only get you to where you can boot into safe mode, if at all.

You still might have to re-install the drivers for the on-board video, but Vista may still have the files and might detect the hardware and
do so automatically. Otherwise, you might have to boot to safe mode and install them, which would then need a reboot, etc.

Hope this helps....

I could not get into any of the safe modes. On board video was working. PC would stop at cbvd.sys. PC Linux could not mount one the partitions. In the end I copied over what I could and then installed Windows 7 on another drive.

Thanks everyone for trying to help me. Win 7 install was lo....ng overdue. :)
