Unable to correctly install AMD Display Drivers

Hello,

I've recently bought a SSD to replace my fried HDD. It is a Premier Pro SP900, 256 GB SSD. Installing it on my laptop Acer Aspire 5560G (64 bits) went exceptionally easy. The video card is a AMD ATI Radeon HD 6600.

After installing Windows 8.1, which also went flawlessly, I wanted to install the AMD drivers because my resolution is low (1024x768) but also because it is much better than the Basic Windows Display Adapter which came preinstalled with Windows 8.1.

I tried the Catalyst Omega 14.12 Software Suite provided and recommended by AMD. Installation went fine, but after I rebooted and logged back in, I got a BSOD ("SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED"). BlueScreenView showed that the culprit was "atikmdag.sys" ( so I tried the fixes here: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/answers/id-1656824/atikmdag-sys-error-bsod-startup.html but to no avail).

I then tried, as recommended, to boot into safe mode, delete my ATI drivers again and reboot etc. But Windows 8.1 always tries to auto-update the faulty AMD drivers so it results in a BSOD again. I tried multiple versions of the Catalyst driver (also tried to install ONLY the driver without the Catalyst manager app), and nothing worked.

If I block the auto-update of the driver, the system restores the default adapters (Windows Display Adapter).

Any ideas? Thanks in advance. Please let me know if you need any more information. I tried a lot of things but nothing worked.

Regards,
Lennart
