I have a custom built PC, how do I know which operating system I should use?

Solution
I'd recommend Windows 7 Professional 64 bit. OEM is cheaper but if you decide to upgrade your motherboard you WILL have to buy a new copy for that new motherboard. If you are prepared to spend ridiculous amounts of money, go with Retail as that has Microsoft Tech Support ( for Windows) and you can activate it on any computer as long as there isn't another computer online running with the same product key. Don't get Windows 8(.1), unless design is at the very bottom of your list. And don't wait for Windows 10. I personally find it hideous. Mac OSX doesn't have enough programs for it, and Yosemite is a girls' toy rather than a powerful system. Linux ( Ubuntu or Mint) is sitting around a black terminal ("command prompt") compiling programs...

windows 7 32bit (Id pick this one less chance of driver issues) or 64bit would work. Where I work we are running W7 on lesser machines just fine. Windows 8 might throw some issues due to missing cpu features.

Linux ( Ubuntu or Mint) is sitting around a black terminal ("command prompt") compiling programs yourself. Simply not enough programs on Linux. Less than Mac OSX. You can get Home Premium if that is cheaper or Ultimate. The differences are minimal, but the pricing is hilarious. £200 for Ultimate! You could(not saying that you are) build a Home Theatre PC for that money or get REALLY good headphones ( not ones that have a 'b' on them).
