Attempting to build my first gaming computer while using a few components from my old Dell XPS 8300 as I can. I have a brand new 725w PSU and an MSI R9 280 GPU. I was intending on purchasing an ASUS Z97-A LGA 1150 Intel Z97 ATX Intel Motherboard and using the i7 2600 3.4 ghz CPU + 4 ram sticks + the hard drive out of the old Dell. Would I run into any problems with this set up? Should I purchase a different motherboard? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Calc beat me to the punch on the socket issue, beyond that all of the parts you have listed should be compatible in most cases... just make sure you get a board that's compatible with DDR3 memory (shouldn't be a problem atm).

If you are planning on using the Dell XPS case, you need to get a Micro-ATX size motherboard. There's maybe 135 mm of clearance for a cooler. The Noctua U9 92mm coolers fit. 120mm coolers won't. There's a factory position for a 92mm fan on the rear and an 92mm intake fan on the lower front.

I am definitely buying a new case. Any recommendations?

Beats me. I just modded my Dell XPS case with a Noctua cooler, Noctua fans, and a Radeon R7 250 video card. I like the size of the case. I also have an audiophile D/A converter, head phone amp, and headphones, so a digital audio out is a must. It is a LOT simpler to have it on the motherboard than on an expansion card.
