Adding ethernet from FIOS ONT to Actiontec router: Direct route

This is a quick question, I think. I'm switching from 1) coax between the FIOS ONT and the Actiontec router to 2) Ethernet between ONT and Actiontec.

My question is: Does it have to be one straight unbroken connection between the two or can it go through an Ethernet switch?

Background: The ONT is mounted on the end wall of the house. I'm popping it through the garage wall. It would be super-convenient if I could plug it into a switch and then take it from there to the Actiontec. It would allow me to have my home Raspberry Pi monitoring system tied in without having to make a return trip from the Actiontec.

It's no big deal either way. But it would just be a bit easier if I could send it to the switch first.

Thanks in advance for any help!

In most cases you need to ask verison to turn on the ethernet port on the ONT. There is also some restriction I forget why you must keep using the coax with the actiontec router...I think it is related to the TV but I forget. I know you can hook a different router the ONT ethernet.

You actually have 2 different questions about extending the ethernet. If you had distance issues you could use a switch to go farther you could even put in standard gig fiber and put in media converters I suppose.
Your other question is more can I plug more than one device into the ONT directly. That answer is only if you pay verison for a second IP addresses. This is the same issue as people who want to plug a switch between the cable modem and the...

Your traffic still needs to go from the ONT to the router and then back to the Raspberry device. The normal way to do that is with cables but you could do it with vlan tags to create virtual cables but you would need to buy a small managed switch. It maybe easier/cheaper to do that and not run more cables but that is one of those money thinks only you can make.

The ONT must be connected directly to the Actiontec. It can't connect through the switch.

Why not leave it on coax, or is this unavoidable?
